Maybe we don't have to worry too much about Skynet...

According to one of the people who helped write the Obama administration's defense policy, robot technology is not quite there just yet.

Hopefully, I will still one day be able to get a Bender robot that I can program to steal for me. That would be cool...

Still, I honestly don't think it's a good idea to be developing A.I. technology that's more intelligent than a human...

We're still struggling to develop AI technology as intelligent as a rat. I wouldn't worry.

As always computers are much better than us at well-defined computational problems. However, trying to leverage that power into decision-making skills is incredibly difficult. And getting to the point where self-awareness is even a remote possibility? It would probably require a very different approach from anything that's been tried so far.

After getting a good look at the creepy robots on this page here...

...I am agreeing with you more and more. That being said, it will be quite some time before the Cylons send a few sexy Six models our way to conquer the world.

Making robots that look quasi-human and can somewhat mimic human movements is nowhere near any kind of self-aware AI. Things like Skynet and Cylons will remain strictly science fiction for a long time to come, unless we have some kind of remarkable, unforeseen breakthrough in AI research--and I wouldn't hold my breath on that.
