Maybe I Should Just Go Back To Bed

The Boy Who Cried Worf

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Well my year hasn't started out too great. I woke up to find I didn't get a job that I thought I was really in the running for. Annoyingly it was all rather sudden too. Last thing I heard before the holidays was the phone interview went well and they wanted me to come in for an Excel test. I don't hear from them for two weeks. I figure it's just because of the holidays. Today I get a response to my e-mail saying the job is no longer available. I wrote back to the temp agency to say thanks for the offer and hopefully they'll tell me if the problem was me or if they just went another way.

I really wanted to start off the year doing something different. So far things are looking very the same.
:sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh:

I hear you on the job thing. I had a few I thought I was a shoo-in for, and I didn't get them. And then there was this job, which I knew I could do, but I wasn't sure I was what they wanted--and I got it! So, just keep your options open.

Unless you actually start doing the job, you don't got it. I remember one guy telling me, "As far as I'm concerned, the job is yours, but I'm required to interview all the applicants.". I would have loved to have that job, too. But that did not come to pass.

Man, I had no idea just how stupid, shady or just plain crazy the job hiring process could be until we started hiring for a position here with this agency.

The poor applicants, and several of them were really strong, really got screwed. I feel sorry for them because I knew they needed the $ but I'm glad that they got away.

Looking for a job has been hard for me also...the sad thing is my old job knows I need the work and they keep telling me when this one guy leaves they will hire me back...but then no one above him is aware of this and have made it clear before they didn't want me back even though I am a good worker and better than the people they have hired since I have been gone...because I quit without a 2 weeks notice they upper management made it so i couldn't be hired back even though my old manager says it isn't a problem.
Other places I applied at aren't even calling.

:(

Oh I feel your pain. I assured by a hiring manager that the job I applied for was mine (after going through 2 interviews and a battery of tests) and he just needed to confirm my start date with his superior. Then I never heard back, and when I called, was told the job had been given to someone else at the 11th hour.

No explanation why they passed me up. This was a county government job and I believe someone called in a favor to get someone else hired.

That was a year and a half ago. I haven't even been able to score a call back in my job hunt since. Fortunately I'm currently employed, but I'm so unhappy that I'm currently scraping every extra penny into a savings account so I can bail, new job or not, once I have a year's worth of income in the bank.

Agreed, I know the feeling. I've had several job interviews that have been practically assured, only to be disappointed.

Those are the worse. Especially they give you some bullshit reason for not hiring you. Had so many jobs that got right up to "Call Monday and we'll get your started", then after several hours or days of phone tag the Manager come back with "Well, we just decided to go another way".

Or my fav: get a job, get hired in, start work, work nearly a whole week, then get told that the person that hired you wasn't authorized for new hiring and that they're going to let you go...oh and by the way, since technically you were never officially hired, they're not going to pay you the starting rate you agreed to.

Excuse me a minute...

..."FUCK YOU K-MART!"

...as I was saying.

That's pretty much what they did here on the position they were hiring for. And that was after my naive self spent 3 days scoring the applicants. I was totally disgusted and wanted to call those poor people and tell them how sorry I was.

This probably makes me sound like a dick, but I am glad I am not alone in this happening. It's just that I tend to blame myself and put myself down heavily when things like this happen. So it is nice to have some empirical data that even people who are smart and qualified get the shaft.

I did get bit of good news today. The census is starting up locally next month and since I worked on it last year I am automatic to work on it again so if all goes as planned I'll have some money coming in for a few months. Hopefull until my pharmacy tech schooling ends in this summer.

Wow, you went further than I did. They called me telling me it was in the bag and then I had to call them a week later just to get the "We're not hiring".

Wait till you're stocking, getting along great with your coworkers, it's hard work but for a summer job it's not too bad, store security walks up and escorts you to the office. The General Manager asks you wait you think you're doing. That's when you find out that the GM and AM both had been on vacation and the woman that had hired you was a shift-supervisor who had not authority to do interviews or new-hires. The only reason I last a week was tha everyone assumed that the GM or AM had hired me before they went on vacation and that was why I was there.

I didn't even get a chance to keep the job, I was out and out shitcanned just cause I didn't follow proper new hire procedure.

To bad you couldn't have talked them into keeping you...it really wasn't your fault.

Something you have to remember, especially in an economy like this, is that when you get turned down, it's not you. Really. You can be 100% qualified for the job, a perfect fit for it, and they'll just pick someone else for an arbitrary reason that has absolutely nothing to do with you. As with a layoff, don't take a job rejection personally, because it isn't. In fact, you should send a "thank you" letter if you actually interviewed with the company. This looks very good and they are likely to keep you on file for the future. The worst thing you can do is act offended.

At least, that's my experience as someone who works as a professional. It probably matters a bit less in things like retail, where there is high turnover.

I have the opposite problem. I have a job that I hate with every ounce of my being and wish I never had to walk into that place ever again. Unfortunately, since it's a paycheck and health benefits, I don't have a choice. Eight hours daily are so highly miserable and loaded with stress from dealing with dumb, rude, and lazy people at a crackhead pace, I go home at night and instead of looking for other jobs like I should to get out of this hellhole, I drink a six pack and escape through watching sci-fi or listening to music. Vicious, dark, dark cycle. I feel trapped and I need a way out of this nonsense asap. I'll take suggestions too. And something will pop up, Dark Journey, in my experience and average of 3 to 4 months although this shitty economy may have an effect too.

Did you get paid *at all* for that?

Yeppers. About a dollar less a hour than I was told I'd make, but at least I got something out of it.

^ I still can't believe that what they did to you was legal. Shouldn't you have some recourse against them? Whoever hired you might not have had ACTUAL authority, but they had (according to you) APPARENT authority. Doesn't that count for anything at all?

No, you're definitely not a dick. I do the exact same thing. I'm really hard on myself at times! And I'm practically in the same situation as you. I got an email from a lady that interviewed me a while back about a job saying that she was hiring for a position and that if I'm interested, to please email her back. Well, I email her back and wait..only to not be emailed back by her at all. :(
Then one time I get a call about a job and the lady sounds really enthusiastic..she tells me to please send my resume to her via email whenever I get home(the sooner the better) and she'll see what she can do about a job for me. I never heard back from her again. :( So I feel that I get my hopes all up for nothing, only to be shot down at again. One time it was so bad I went on an eating binge and gained about five pounds from being so depressed about it. But I've learned to take it with a grain of salt and to not let it bother me. Hopefully soon a job will come my way.

Interviewing for a new job blows. Not even the stress level, but the uber cheesy questions they ask where you basically have to tell them how awesome you are with all this fake corporatespeak garbage. Oh well, I guess I need to get ready - to get a different job and I haven't interviewed in years.
