Some more info about how we run the contests that I forgot to mention before. Once the closing date passes, a voting poll is created by the person running this month's contest. Anyone can vote - it's usually pick the two best stories, but that depends on the amount of entries - and the prize for winning the contest is to pick the challenge for next month.
There's a winning entries thread if you want to get an idea of what previous challenges were.

Finally finished! It's aggravating me how long this took to write. And, Count Zero, thank you for not putting a maximum word limit on the contest! I'm not saying this couldn't have done with a bit of judicious editing but I'm glad I don't have to
