May I moan a bit?

Star Trek, to boldly go where no-one has gone before.

I'm sure I'll warm to it but I've never been especially fond of Klingons.
Seems we're stuck with them, at least one in each episode?

To start by declaring a war will limit Discovery to the sphere of the war!

So, no Star Trekking then?

You have the whole universe! With a spore drive that can take you anywhere in it.

Next week looks like more of a classic trek standalone type story.

Well, they have the spore drive so I expect something'll go wrong with that :)
I'm sure it'll be good.
Hands up who loved 'enterprise' with Captain Jonathan Archer?
(took me a while to warm up to it but then absolutely fell in love with it)

They got seven bales of the chemical element known as SH 1TE kicked out of them and succeeded though diversity.
Met a lot of aliens too.

Now that we are in an alliance with the Klingons, let's boldly go where no-one has gone before!
To infinity and beyond!

No.

I do like the excellent effects! The best so far. Just that ... ok
War as we know forces innovation, is that it? Is that the idea?
SpaceX is doing innovation without war.

This show is about the war with the Klingons. I don't think the message is "war forces innovation." We've had war stories in Trek before. This is another one. War is a simple, easy way to bring forth conflict, character drama, and ethical and moral dillemas inherent to Trek. Some may say it was a lazy route, I say that the writers had a LOT on their plate to accomplish with the first season of this show, and a war was a story that would set up all of their other stuff in one fell swoop.

The war setting is one of the nuisances of the show, yes, given that they're handling it so badly.

It is the ESSENCE of the show, and so far it's been handled very well.

Enterprise is the perfect example of what they should not do, and why a war story for season 1 works so well for this show. It provides instant drama and opportunities for character exploration, development, and dilemmas. Enterprise characters were bland and lifeless and a lot of that was there was no inherent story to explore them in. Episodic storytelling is not the best or most efficient way to develop characters.

My advice?

The show is about the Klingon-Federation War.

Why complain about what it's not?

If it's a bad steak, say it's a bad steak but don't complain it's not waffles.

BINGO.
