May Challange - Illogical

If you haven't seen the movie, don't read it. It's short, and I will try to extend it before the end of the month, but I wanted to get it up here now cause I'll be moving and starting school in the next week, so I might be to busy to post it later.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Everything was happening so fast, and for the first time in his life Volok felt fear. He, and several of his fellow Vulcans, were running to the evac site. They had been told to leave everything behind, and to get to the shuttles as quickly as they could. As he ran, he could feel the ground shake as the planet succumbed to an incredibly deadly force. In the distance he saw Mount Selaya, one of their most sacred temples, and one of the few remaining bastions of the old ways.

Normally you could see Mount Selaya for miles, proudly looking over the Vulcan landscape. Now, however, as he ran he saw the mountain crumble. It was like a widow, collapsing to the ground to weep for their loss.

Finally he reached one of the shuttles, took his seat and strapped in. The pilot didn't bother to check with the control tower, as they had just been instructed to lift off as soon as they were full with passengers. Volok watched as the ground sped away from them, and as they rose into orbit he saw cracks and fissures forming in the crust. At that moment he realized there was nothing he could do, his home was dying. He could see several of the shuttles behind them stop, and be dragged back down into the planets gravity well as though it were the shell of some hungry beast trying to hatch. Then in one final moment it happened, the planet imploded leaving behind a black hole. He felt the lives of all his people that didn't make it end in that moment.

There was a scream that ripped through the silence as Volok shot up in his bed. It took him a moment to realize where he was, and to realize that the scream had come from himself. The images were so vivid, even months later. Volok placed his head in his hands, trying to regain his composure. He noticed that his clothes had been soaked in sweat, and a wave of emotion washed over him. He reached for the comm panel and spoke into it.

"Master, it is imperative that I speak with you."

“Pain is illogical.” Volok said to his master.

“Pain is inevitable,” the master replied.

Volok simply stared at his master. He knew, as all Vulcans did, that the emotions were there; but for them to show in him, as they did frequently now, was not logical.

“Volok, listen to me,” the master continued. “We all share a common pain now, one that few people will ever understand.”

“I understand that Master, but even so.”

“We’ve lost our home Volok. Many years from now, this will feel like home, but it will never be Vulcan.”

A tear began to roll down Voloks cheek. He had been on one of the evacuating shuttles as he watched the home world vanish. He could feel the cries of terror as some of the shuttles were pulled back into the gravity well of the newly formed black hole. Even now, months later on their new world, he felt like his very katra had been left behind.

All over the Federation, Vulcan refugees were trying to adapt to their new life. Some had lost all their mental control, reverting back to the emotional, savage ways of their ancestors. He had heard news that Sokar, his oldest friend, had even taken his own life 3 days ago.

“Master,” he said quietly. “What is to become of us?”

“We will adapt.” He replied. “It is the only logical option.”

Volok could feel the emotions welling up inside of him as he turned away.

“Volok, it is understandable that you are confused. We have a long road in front of our people, and it will take a long time for us to heal, but heal we must.”

“Yes, Master Spock,” he said, trying to regain control. “I will endeavor to do better.”

The old Vulcan stood and left the room. He was also finding it difficult to deal with the loss of their home, but he new that his people were still needed. And he knew, that as long as his people survived, a small part of the home world would also survive; even just in memory.

You might want to add a spoiler warning to the thread title or at least put one before your story... ;)

An interesting look into the consequences of Vulcan's destruction. I hope you get around to expanding on it.

Probably one of the most signifcant questions to arise from the movie is what will happen to the surviving Vulcans. Box office returns permitting, I'm sure it's a question the sequel will raise as well.

You would assume, as the most stoic race in the galaxy, most of them will be able to adapt easily. But a number might not.

This is an interesting exploration of one of them.

Well we have seen vulcans have a hard time dealing with loss. Spock, while admittedly half human, lost his composure for a moment when the USS Intrepid was eaten by the space amoeba. I could imagine that the loss of the home world, and all the vulcans on it, would reach other vulcans on a much greater distance then the intrepid did, which is partly what I was trying to convay.

For those that have already read it, I just went back and added to it. Looking forward to comments.

Very interesting--and just the tip of the iceberg, I would think. Many of the few surviving Vulcans would be dealing with post-traumatic stress, of which nightmares are just one symptom. The challenge to their whole philosophy of life would be unprecedented. Some would be inspired to truly heroic effort, while others would be tempted to give way to despair.

Very nice...not only did you do a wonderful job with Volok, but you also captured the older Spock wonderfully. Unlike the younger version...the elder Spock's emotions always seem to be very close to the surface: controlled, but nearby to be drawn on when necessary.

And I think that may be what Vulcan of this era really needs.

Fantastic!

Thanks, I was hoping that it would give you that sense of uncertainty that I believe all vulcans are feeling right now. And TD, I happen to especially like how those two lines played off each other. It has a ring to it.

Yeah, great lines there. Good idea to look at the consequences-its fairly virgin territory.

Virgin, and fertile; this generation's Jacqueline Lichtenberg is going to have a field day. Spock as Moses - or traitor? Three years ago, his Nu-Incarnation was looked on as, at best, a second class citizen. Today, Spock Prime has incorporated his emotions into his belief system, making him the closest thing to a heretic as can possibly exist to Vulcans today... will Spock cause further disruption of the Vulcan way of life? Is he going to become Surak's Martin Luther?

Woo.

One of you Vulcan guys run with it - it sounds like a bright future for Vulcan fanfic!

Go to it, Kaziarl; like the best fanfic I've read, this one did what it had to do - get me thinking about the possibilities.
