Maurice Hurley's unused Generations script?

From what I see of NuKirk, he didn't have the early tempering that his Prime self had. George Kirk was the key factor in Jim's development.

After the recent death of Maurice Hurley. I wonder what happens to the unfilmed script.

It probably remains in a dusty warewouse alongside "The Planet of the Titans" script and the Ark of the Covenant.

... and "The First Adventure" script.

But I know Berman found Hurley's script last year. But unfortunately he didn't bother to show more.

Only ever being looked at by "Top Men."

"TOP. MEN."

Alright, we've had twenty years to discuss the flaws and shortcomings of Generations, which I need not elaborate upon here. With the benefit of hindsight, it's obvious it all boils down to the fact that it was thrown together in a hurry, the cast and crew being exhausted coming off the final season of NextGen. I'm going to indulge myself and post a list of things I'd have done to improve the film. If you disagree with my creative ideas, just come out and say so. ;)

-Structure the film differently. Start off by introducing the Ent-D and Soran, gradually revealing the story of Kirk and the Ent-B through flashbacks. After all, this movie is supposed to be about Picard's crew, and that's the first impression I want to leave people with.

-That being said, I don't want to shortchange the participating TOS cast. I'd show the aftermath of the Ent-B disaster, with Chekov interviewing the Lakul survivors for the subsequent investigation. We could have a scene with him and Guinan. I'd bring Kirk more fully into the 24th century and have him board the Ent-D, interacting and working with the crew, ultimately playing a decisive role in the outcome of the situation.

-On that note, Scotty is already in the 24th century. It should be easy to write him into the action, but the tricky part is explaining his continued survival in a way that doesn't confuse the uninitiated. I'm sure they could work it out, though.

-Have Soran team up with the Romulans instead of the Duras sisters. It would be more exciting to have the Ent-D fight that massive Romulan warbird instead of an outdated Klingon BOP, and I've always been disappointed that the warbirds never found their way into the movies. The Romulans are already part of the background action as it is so it wouldn't be too hard from a writing perspective.

-Have Soran and Guinan interact on screen. The sheer contrast would be dramatically compelling.

-As for Kirk's final fate, it goes without saying that he should not have died by falling off a goddamn bridge.

Yeah I would have loved that, I always really liked the D'eridex warbird - it was just so big and imposing and would have been a great enemy for the Enterprise to fight without descending into ridiculous big black ship territory. Plus the scene would have made much more sense, as the D should have wiped the floor with that BoP. I can see why they wanted to throw the sisters in there, but they could have easily have been replaced with Sela if that was the route they wanted to go.

"It's a long story" or something of the sort would have worked great. I'm more than sure Kirk is used to those kind of answers, especially just having popped out of a giant Tardisy anomaly.

I had forgotten to mention Sela. Yes, she would be a more interesting antagonist than the Duras sisters, who should have been saved for the Worf/Dominion War story arcs on DS9 anyway. If I remember correctly, Denise Crosby had expressed disappointment at not being invited back for Nemesis, but I think Generations is as good a place to insert her into the films as any.

PS: Here's a size comparison between the Ent-D and a D'eridex-class warbird:

It's a shame they never really made it clear just how massive these warbirds are, though they obviously had ample opportunity throughout the course of the show's run. I guess the closest, offhand, would be this shot from "The Neutral Zone," though it could be chalked up to perspective.

Kinda sums up the missed opportunities that were the TNG movies in general I suppose.

Not to mention that if the film was written to include Kirk on the Ent-D, you have someone that needs a little catching up, which is always a good vehicle for informing the general audience just who this "Sela" is.
