Maurice Hurley's Star Trek 7 script question

James Cole

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Has the plot to this script (or the script itself) ever been released? I was trying to look this up and didn't come across anything. Would be interesting to read an alternate Generations.

From what I recall, it was about an anomaly that was threatening to devour the universe, and Picard ended up going to the holodeck to get advice from a Kirk hologram. Or some damn shit. Not much info had been released about the Hurley script.

Sounds a little like "These Are The Voyages" (the advice from the Holodeck, at least.)

More like "Booby Trap," the TNG episode where Geordi recreated Enterprise designer Leah Brahms on the Enterprise holodeck.

Or like the novel Ship of the Line by Diane Carey, which actually does involve Picard seeking advice from a holographic Kirk.

A little web search has turned up a tad more information on the Hurley script. Read here.

Hurley's screenplay told the tale of a fold in space, through which alien creatures accidentally fall into our dimension.

These creatures soon become a threat to the universe they are desperately trying to leave. The story was in essence a tale of survival at any cost by creatures who don't realize the amount of damage their attempts to return home is causing our universe.

It's up to Picard and company to stop them. Hurley's tale featured the character of Captain Kirk in a series of scenes were Picard summons a holographic manifestation of the legendary Captain on the ship's holodeck in order to seek his advice.

Not bad. Not great. About even with what we got. It's clearly very much a TNG episode. Still it would have been nice if they had done at least one movie that wasn't a cliche with a black hat. If anything it was a pretty pure science fiction story rather than the standard space opera pap that Berman put out every couple of years.

BTW not knocking space opera. I read it, watch it and write it myself. I just didn't think Berman was any good at it. First Contact was just dumb luck. ;)

The idea of Picard (and Riker) seeking counsel in the holodeck from a computer reconstruction of historical figures is ludicrous... especially for Picard, who had a bit of a luddite streak in him. This isn't Scotty visiting the TOS bridge for nostalgia. This would be Picard talking to a computer pretending to be Kirk to seek advice during a crisis. Terrible idea completely out of character for Picard.

You could have got Quentin Tarantino to write the story and it would still be a better film than what we got from GEN. I wish that they'd make an effort to publish these drafts in some form, its always interesting to see how a film develops in detail, as opposed to just a fleeting footnote or a summary.
