News Matthew Perry, dead at 54

This is terrible news. He was easily my favorite part of Friends and my favorite beyond the show. I loved his guest appearances on The West Wing as well as his roles in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The Whole Nine Yards films, among many others.

Like others have said, 54 is far too young, especially since it seemed like he finally managed to overcome his demons. I was really moved by his conversation with Stephen Colbert earlier this year when he was on the show to talk about his book that discussed those demons.

Requiescat in pace. :(

Go find his Good Wife episodes.

(He played) An absolute a-hole.

I remember the very first episode and scene of Friends I saw was of Perry as Chandler locked in a lobby of some building with a beautiful woman and him inner monologuing. Was hilarious and made me tune in to Friends every week for him. He had it. I thought he was leagues ahead of his costars and was destined for greatness. For a time it seemed he was on his way with a movie career but it didn't continue for whatever reasons. I actually quit watching Friends around season 6 and just two months ago (20 years later) started rewatching the series again. Respect him above all for his honesty in dealing with his addictions. I didn't know he had written a book about his life, I must read it some time.

This was such a huge shock. Chandler was always my favourite character in Friends, and the one I most identified with when I watched the show back in the day. He had so many issues but seemed to have put many of them behind him and 54 is way too young for someone to go (and as a 53 year old that feels especially relevant now!)

He bought a lot of people a lot of joy and by all accounts helped a lot of people with their own addition issues. I saw a snippet of an interview with Hank Azaria earlier where he said Perry had helped him battling his own demons.

RIP sir. :(

I didn't know I had congestive heart failure and got into a hot tub once and it nearly ended me. I know he had some heart troubles too. I feel really bad for him.

I should finish season 10 of friends today.

I don't think Chandler and Monica, or Mike and Phoebe were legally married because New York State did not start recognizing online ordination until 2006.

I finished listening to his book which is read by Matthew Perry himself. To say he went through hell would be putting it mildly. Definitely think it's worth reading or listening for anyone feeling lost or trapped by their addictions. He speaks very honestly about himself and his life. I'm glad he found peace but he deserved more time living that peaceful life.

I wasn't a big fan of Friends during its first run, mainly just seeing episodes in passing. But I liked the general concept, and also recognized most of the main cast had good hearts and got along well together. Aside from the show, I mainly only knew Courteney Cox from the Scream films, and Matt LeBlanc from the 1998 Lost in Space movie. But of all the series' characters, the one people generally compared me to was Chandler. I wasn't sure why at the time, since I hadn't seen much of the program and didn't have a real basis for an informed opinion. But after watching more of Matthew Perry's work as Chandler, the similarities became very clear to me - we both tended to talk the same, emphasizing certain words in a sentence to try and make a point (though in his case, it was obviously exaggerated for comedic effect). We also both gesture a lot while speaking, which in my case comes with having both epilepsy and Asperger's Syndrome. The latter has given me an extensive vocabulary, but I still struggle otherwise with trying to make myself understood face-to-face...so things like using my hands along with my facial expressions help to convey additional meaning behind my words alone, at least from my own point of view. Chandler also tended to be rather sarcastic as a defense mechanism, and I also behave that way sometimes as well.

Apart from his sitcom role, the only other things I saw Matthew in were the 1999 comedy Three to Tango, and a small bit of his The Odd Couple relaunch in 2015. I was very saddened when I learned how he passed; drowning can't be an easy way to go.

To this day I have never seen a single episode.

As for MP, I can't remember which film this came from, I just remember a scene where he is talking to someone named Chuy, and MP's character says "Chewie? Nice to meet you. Luke Skywalker."
