Matthew Graham named as the first writer for the Star Wars TV show

Sounds promising. Will be interesting to see when this happens, as George Lucas wants to wait for technology to catch up to what he wants to do. More writers will be announced. Wonder who else will be attached to this project. Could be a sign for more space opera styles of shows to come in the future.

A source has revealed to us that British writer, Matthew Graham, is one of the team that Lucas recruited to the project.

First, I was not a fan of Graham's Dr. Who two-parter. Although it was only partly due to the writing of the episode.

Second, I still find it hilarious that they have fifty third-draft scripts written already for a show that does not have a showrunner or a single character cast. The show needs to have some flexibility and creative give and take, instead of Lucas stockpiling scripts and complaining about making them on a TV budget.

So, the guy who wrote "Fear Her" and "Rebel Flesh"/"Almost People"?! :wtf: Those are some of my least favorite episodes of NuWho :wtf:

Yeah, I've found Matthew Graham's Doctor Who to be quite subpar. Of course, wasn't he also the showrunner for the British Life on Mars? I've never watched it, but it was quite popular.

So they asked the Doctor Who showrunner and when he turned them down they got one of the Doctor Who writers?

Huh.

One gets the impression they like Doctor Who. Who knew.

Well, I seem to recall reading they also courted Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, Lost etc. writers, let's hope they have someone like, I don't know, Michael Taylor or Bryan Fuller or something. I'd get a peculiar kick if they improbably hired Robert Wertheimer.

Also, it's interesting to note his contract has already expired. It sounds less like George Lucas hired a permenent stable of writers for the series and more he plucked a half-dozen TV guys, had them churn out fifty hours worth of scripts, and showed them the door. What's gonna happen when those scripts will need rewrites when they're actually shooting this show, as I'm sure would happen?

Or if they go for a 51st episode? Food for thought, or not.

RTD would kind of fit Star Wars-his Doctor Who was campy and also very epic, everything but the kitchen sink at the same time, sort of like the Star Wars. Matthew Graham, not so sure. "Fear Her" was one of the weaker WHOs from early on, but I did like his recent 2-parter.

George's pal Steven Spielberg at least is a Doctor Who fan-he hired Steven Moffat (WHO's current showrunner) to write Tintin, and has expressed interest in the past in developing a WHO feature film project during the 90s when the program was on a long hiatus. (That's where the Spider-Daleks come from, I believe).

BTW the series is apparentally called Star Wars: Detours, which to me sounds more like a Dark Horse comic series than something resembling a space opera.

Seems like a pretty moot point, since this show is effectively dead. The excuse that Lucas is "waiting for technology to catch up" is pretty pathetic. People are making good sf/f now, and making money off it. If Lucas needs technology to tell a good story, then I don't trust that he has a good story to tell. A pencil is all the technology you need to tell a good story.

And all this effort is unnecessary. I actually think Lucas already has the right solution to getting Star Wars on TV - The Clone Wars is not only a way to do eye-popping stuff on a cable TV budget, but it also has talented writers and voice actors that make it far superior to those dreadful prequels.

The essential problem is how to make Star Wars more intelligent and sophisticated so that it has enough "meat" to provide years' worth of stories on TV, yet still feel like Star Wars. The OT is great, but that approach only works in movies. On TV it would come off as pretty thin on both psychology and politics. Just extrapolating that approach to TV isn't the answer.

The prequels managed to lose all the fun and joy of the OT, while being heavy handed and unconvincing in its depiction of psychology and politics. And there was nothing on the metaphysical/mystical front at all, which should be the heart and soul of Star Wars, since it's the feature that most distinguishes it from most space opera sci fi (and the feature that results in criticism that Star Wars "isn't sci fi," but who cares about that.)

The Clone Wars' solution is to start with the fun/joy/kid-stuff wild romp that Star Wars should always be, and then incrementally add in psychological, political and mystical storylines. Under Dave Filoni's direction, they have found just the right compromise that manages to appeal to grownups and kids alike, and it is right on the money for feeling like Star Wars.

Compared with that, bringing in a whole new crew that hasn't worked on Star Wars before (to my knowledge), and trying for something like The Godfather (!!!???) is just asking for trouble. Writing stories that do feel like Star Wars and not a hundred other things is probably a lot harder than it looks like from the outside. Odds are that they would completely miss the mark.

Lucas has a good thing going. He should continue Star Wars stories with Dave Filoni and the current crew of animators, writers and voice actors. When The Clone Wars' story is over, launch a new animated series right away, bridging the gap until ANH. (I wouldn't mind one little bit it Ahsoka managed to survive the purge and continued as the lead character.)

And if Lucas ever wants to add a live-action series to his existing animated show roster, he already has a successful writing crew. He should just turn the live-action and animated divisions over to Filoni's direction and let him expand the ranks as needed. I see no reason why writing for animation is fundamentally different than writing for live action.

If it ain't broke (finally!), don't break it. Again.

like his Tuskegee Airmen movie he's been wanting to do, this will never be made.

We'll see Red Tails before we see this live-action show. What's far more likely is that the animated approach will continue.

A "Dark Times" show would be pretty cool, but from what Lucas seems to be saying it'll be more akin to Steve Perry's SW novels.

As for Red Tails, it has been filming and is supposedly set for an early 2012 release. However they don't seem to be promoting it a lot.

Well, the reason why there was a 16 year gap between ROTJ and TPM was that Lucas was, yes, waiting for technology to catch up.

Now, you can argue about the story-telling quality of the prequels and whether they were worth the wait, but the fact is, we've been here before. And I'm sure lots of fans during that period said 'He'll never make those movies.' But, 3 prequels down the line ...

The prequels are a wonderful example of why waiting for technology doesn't count for spit if your goal is to produce something worth watching. :rommie:

It does sound underwhelming, let's hope that - if true - is just a temporary name. Star Wars: Detours sounds like Star Wars: Side Stories or Star Wars: Miscellany.

And Lucas did wait until he was going to make the prequels before writing their screenplays. Again, who's gonna revise these when the time comes, one wonders?
