Mattel/Radica Trek 20Q Bargain!

I remember hearing about the development of the Trek 20Q (20 Questions) electronic game a while ago. They even had a website where you could try it on-line and suggest questions. Well, time passed, and I never did see the item in any stores.

Last night, we stopped in to a Big Lots and as I walked down one of the toy aisles, I saw a package with a Star Trek title on it and a plastic replica of the TOS Enterprise - albeit not a very good one - within the package.

Looking more closely, I saw the 20Q logo. "I'll be damned!", I thought. "The first place I see this is at Big Lots?"

I picked up the package and looked at the price......$5 !!!!! I took it over to my wife and said, "Here, you're buying me a cheap gift for Christmas."

Big Lots buys close-outs, but also marketing failures. The game may have been produced without a set buyer ('on speculation') or did not perform well in limited test markets... so Big Lots bought them and held them in a warehouse until Christmas... or as luck would have it, a successful Star Trek movie created interest in the game.:vulcan:

What's "20Q"? :vulcan:

It means "20 Questions" Basically, you think of anything from Trek, and it asks 20 questiond to determine what your'e thinking of.

I actually got one for myself earlier this week. My mother found it at a local comic book store a few months ago which was selling its stock 90% off (due to renovations) and she waited until now to give it to me.

Anyhoo, you can think of anything from any TV series (even TAS) or movie (except for Trek XI). Mind you, I find myself surprised at some of the answers it gives. It guesses character as obscure as Robert April or Mr Kyle, while not seeming able to guess prominent characters like Wesley Crusher or Geordi La Forge. As far as ships are concerned, it can guess ships that have never actually made an appearance, like the USS Titan, but can't figure out a ship that had a ship named after it, like USS Relativity. If you're thinking of Xindi scientist Degra, it guesses Shran. I've tried at least three times for the USS Stargazer, once it guessed Danube class runabout, twice it guessed USS Yamato.

It's definately an interesting experiance.

There have been a number of versions of 20Q. We had the initial "generic" version and its accuracy in guessing what you were thinking of was really good.

I don't know if my wife wrapped it yet. If she didn't, I'll try to get a picture and post it.

Never seen them. I'd like to see photos, too. You should buy them up and start putting them up on ebay. I'll bet you make money.
