Matt Smith Reveals DW Departure Date

Well, it wasn't exactly a Jobsian secret. The "Fall of the Eleventh" being teased as this big, epic, universe-ending event in the finale, the next season possibly getting an extra episode, and definitely being pushed back so at least part of it would air in 2013 for the 50th anniversary all implied it was coming up in the next batch.

Care to spoil the mystery for those outside the US who can't watch the vid? ;)

An interviewer asks if Smith is going to be spending more time in America, and he says, "Well, I've got another season of Doctor Who, but after that, definitely."

He's asked if he's going to be looking to work in America and replies that he has one more year on Doctor Who and then will definitely be coming over to try his luck.

Does he say "One more year" or "Another Season"?

That could make a huge difference. One more year, yea, definitely implies only 1 year left (Though that would mean leaving in 2012), but, another season, with the way they are planning on making Series 7 last through 2013, depdning upopn filming schedules could mean there will be a long break between filming schedules that would allow him to look for work in America.

Does he say "One more year" or "Another Season"?

"I've got another year of Doctor Who but then I'm certainly going to come and give it a shot."

Let the arguing over the definition of the word "year"begin!

Is it a year from today? A year from when they start shooting next March? There's been some indications that Series 7 and 8 will shoot pretty much back-to-back so is he counting the two series as one?

Maybe it's best to just wait till they get to promoting the final episode of Matt Smith and him on talk shows talking about his final scenes/episode.

OK, it just was unclear, because you gave both statements in your posts, and actually, it was the "Season" statement that you put in Quotes, leaning me towards believing it was indeed "Season"

I can't see the video where I am, but based on this transcription:

"I've got another year of Doctor Who but then I'm certainly going to come and give it a shot."

All I hear is that after he films the next season he might try for an American production. That doesn't mean he's leaving the show. Note the absence of the word "left" in the first part of that sentence.

Remembering that Doctor Who is changing its production schedule. A year ago they were midway through shooting season 6 (in fact they'd just finished The Doctor's Wife) but they won't be shooting season 7 until the new year it seems. It's the same as everyone saying Karen Gillan was leaving after season 6 - until she said at Comic Con she wasn't. (Which means until the BBC or other reliable source says otherwise, and given the lack of any announcement of new companions or even casting rumors, I'm assuming we'll see her back in Series 7, if not the Christmas special.) And there were plenty of misconceptions and everything regarding when Tennant was leaving, with reliable reports saying everything from the end of Season 4 to him signing on for 1.5 million pounds for Series 5.

Also, Matt Smith is extremely popular (screw the naysayers). Popular enough that the BBC could add more to the kitty to keep him in the role.

Above all else - Matt Smith has said high and low that he wants to be the Doctor for the 50th anniversary. So that means he'll regenerate during the 50th anniversary movie or special or mini-series or whatever they end up doing in November 2013. It's pretty cut-and-dried to me.

I'm personally more nervous that the cash-strapped BBC could do something unthinkable and announce the anniversary as the end date for the series. I'll feel better when Series 9 is commissioned (with or without Matt Smith) for 2014.

Alex

BBC- Relaunch the whole series like it's 2005 all over again!

I certainly hope he changes his mind in the meantime, otherwise it'll be two actors in a row that have left the role far, far too early.

I don't think this is a definitive statement from him...but I'm just going on the quote like everyone else who can't view the video. One assumes this means that he won't be resigning after his contract expires and also would assume that the previous reported term of his contract is correct as well.

Hope it works out better for him than it did Tennant.

What do you mean? Are you referring to post-Doctor Who success? If so, Tennant has been extremely successful. He's been starring in an intensely popular production of Much Ado About Nothing in the West End - a fantastic production, by the way.

More post-Doctor Who american success, which Tennant has not ended up with an overabundance of so far. One can only wonder why, seeing his performance in the pilot of Rex Is Not Your Accent.
