Matt Damon Turned Down the George Kirk Role

Damn, this movie could have had Matt Famon, Tom Cruise, Russel Crowe and Daniel Craig in it :(

I'm thankful they was not.

I'm not a fan of any of those guys, espececially Crowe and Cruise. :borg:

Sometimes, I see people go see any film, just cause such and such is in it. That could lead to a disaster.

Agreed. They made the right move. I'm f_cking sick of Matt Damon's face anyway.
Why? Because I don't think he's a great actor... and I think he's full of himself which gets irritating.

Well, not so much that, it's just that I see people watch ANY film, just cause so and so is in it. Takes away from story telling.

Also, stuff like Star Trek and original Star Wars were so sucessfull was that they originally did not have that well known actors. Same goes for animated stuff....for example....any animated film that has celebs doing voice work (pretty much ALL animated theater stuff these days) and the actors do NOTHING with their voices....you pretty much hear Tom Hanks, Cameren Diaz and Eddie Murphy being Tom Hanks, Cameren Diaz and Eddie Murphy.

When ya got big name celebs, you often just have a cookie cutter routine that has them doing the same old thing. I remember American Dad ripping on George Cloony's acting...they nailed it down so well. :rommie:

Damon I could deal with....but let's hope he does not call up Afleck as well. :p

^^IMO, a cameo is different from a major role. Stunt casting for a cameo can be fine, but for a meatier role I prefer it not be done.

So once an actor becomes very famous they should never accept more than a cameo in any other film? :wtf:

When is hiring a famous actor not stunt casting?

I'd say Nimoy, Ryder, and to a degree even Sylar himself were a *bit* of big name casting. Not to mention ol' Nero himself wasn't an unknown.

There were heaps of big names in this film to help lure Joe Six Pack into the theatre.

Frankly, I think William Shatner would have been more "stunt casting" than Matt Damon.

"Casting a famous actor" is not the same as "stunt casting."

Good. Stunt casting is stupid.

It wouldn't have been "There's George Kirk sacrificing himself for his family," it would have been "Hey, there's Matt Damon in a cameo role..."

Depends on where you live. Aussies sat there saying, "Hey, it's Kim the buff surfer dude from Summer Bay!" (The actor playing George Kirk is well known for his role in "Home and Away", a prime time soapie Down Under.)

Good point, never thought of that. I had no idea that he had done an Aussie show; goes to show that there is a lot of work available out there for actors. As an aside, in my mind I read your "Hey, it's Kim...." line with an Aussie accent. The only thing missing was a Foster's in my hand.

Remember the brief moment in the film's production...before we heard any of the definitive casting news...when so many of us thought for sure Damon would be James T. Kirk, Adrien Brody would be picked for Spock and Gary Sinise would get the part of McCoy?

Good times.

I always found it weird that alot of people go to films because Such-and-Such is in it, rather than that the story's all about. :vulcan:

A story can be had anywhere; visiting with their favorite peeps is what peeps like to do. I remember a post here reporting that some people went just to see Tyler Perry. If that's what gets them into the theater, I'm glad.

My view to be frank.

Whatever gets warm bodies in the seats, I'm generally for it so long as it doesn't completely ruin and/or demean the movie.

Cameos can be fun or they can ruin an experience. For this film, being a Tyler Perry fan, I liked seeing Tyler Perry because he wasn't their to steel the spotlight but to just add to the movies experience, and although it would have been cool to see Damon play George Kirk it worked out great without him. Whose to say we won't still see Damon as George Kirk Jr. Captain Kirk's brother, it would make for another great cameo. However whomever ends up in the twelfth film I hope they are a great actor so they will all give us great performances in the film.

I know someone who's a fairly decent MEDEA fan, yet she did not know that it was Tyler Perry in the new TREK film until I pointed him out then showed her in the closing credits.:p She's so used to seeing him in drag-granny makeup she didn't know it was him at first.
