Mathematics as a universal language?

If sci-fi has taught me anything, there already is a universal language called "English" :vulcan:

If sci-fi is anything to go by, the universal language is more frequently letting their guns do the talking.

Is it possible that an advanced alien species doesn't care about numerical precision? Maybe they are pragmatic engineers, and not particularly scholarly. Could they create technology with a more hands-on approach, getting an intimate knowledge for what they work with, and finding practical improvements through trial and error?

I remember my father telling me a story about some special lubricant that was being purchased by his company, that was supposedly designed to mathematical perfection, so that it performed optimally.

However, the real world is often at odds with such mathematical models, since the real world contains infinitely more variables. The lubricant they purchased was less effective than the stuff that was hand mixed by the people who used it -- the people who worked with the stuff every day.
