Mass Reduction Device

How would that work?

Dunno. Ask one of these guys.

Changing G only reduces the gravitational forces. it does not change the mass.

Tell that to Q.

Q: "Simple: Change the gravitational constant of the universe."
Geordi: "What?"
Q: "Change the gravitational constant of the universe, thereby altering the mass of the asteroid."

I know it doesn't make sense.

But since you didn't catch the reference, -2 Trekkie points for you.

That make sense to Q and in Trek physics, but mass is not defined by a relationship to G, AFAIK
Myabe it is the best Q can explain it to primative carbon bipeds?

Two possible Treksplanations for mass reduction devices:

1. Gravity is a function of the interactions of gravitons in various bodies of mass. If you shield an object from the effects of the gravitons in the masses around it, you reduce the effective mass of that object (or, from the object's perspective, the effective mass of the universe around it).

2. As an object approaches the speed of light, it approaches infinite mass and zero time. The increase in mass and decrease in time are inversely proportional. If you bombard the object with chroniton particles, you increase the object's time and effectively mitigate the increase in mass, possibly up to the point of actually decreasing the effective mass.

These two might actually be viewed as the same thing, if the mechanism for shielding an object mentioned in 1 above is by bombarding it with chronitons as mentioned in 2.

Subspace.
To expand on this:

Each subspace domain seems to have a different speed of light within its boundaries. If a mass is forced into a subspace domain with a faster speed of light, then the "distance" an object is from achieving infinite mass/zero time is increased by that much - which should decrease the apparent mass of the object.

I remember reading somewhere that the process of inertia as we define it is the gravitational interaction between one object and the rest of the objects in the universe....

So maybe a gravity shield would reduce mass by affecting the interial qualities of an object????
