Mass Effect 3 $$(ENDINGS SPOILERS)$$

I'd love a game set before during and after the First Contact War
but since we 'know how it ends' with the Alliance on the council etc it wouldn't be a Big Decisions type of game like the trilogy
but it would be interesting to see the conflict with the Turians

Are there going to be more/different endings or ending DLCs in the future?

  • No. BioWare strongly believes in the team’s artistic vision for the end of this arc of the Mass Effect franchise. The extended cut DLC will expand on the existing endings, but no further ending DLC is planned.

This just makes me mad, the artistic vision argument is just them being stubborn. There is no breach to artistic vision by adding on more ending options. I've never said they needed to remove the endings already in place. Let the 3 people who enjoy them have them, let the rest of us actually be satisfied with the ending to Mass Effect 3!

Looks like they caved in a little

Well, here ya go Mass Effect fans. After the highly-publicized outcry from gamers who were, let's say, "disappointed" with how BioWare handled the ending to Mass Effect 3, today the company has announced Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a downloadable content pack that will "expand upon the events at the end of the critically acclaimed Action RPG".

^ the thing I quoted us from the FAQ section of the EA news article talking directly about this, my point is that they need to go farther and expand the number of endings with new possibilities and options, not just take the 3 they have and give them a polish.

I think I'll be satisfied with this. It's not the most ideal solution but it is the most feasible. A Dragon Age style epilogue that changes depending on your decisions could go a long way to clarifying what happened and giving some sense of closure.

The DLC announcement sounds like they're just adding cinematics.... at the risk of sounding like a whiner, that's pretty disappointing. You couldn't possibly do enough "clarifying" to make the ending remotely sensible.

I'm hoping that they don't just limit the additions to the events that take place after the magical elevator ride and that they add cutscenes during the mission in London that reflect player choice. For example, if Grunt survived the suicide mission and the incident with the Rachni, we get to see him lead Aralakh company during the battle, saving Wrex from being overrun by Reaper forces. If Grunt is dead, Wrex goes down in a blaze of glory. If Wrex is dead, we see Grunt dying trying to save Wreav. If they're both dead, we see Primarch Victus die because of weak Krogan leadership on the battlefield. Moments like that wouldn't require any new gameplay and would allow Bioware to claim that they maintained the "artistic integrity" of their star child nonsense, but they'd give players the feeling that choices mattered.

However, there's still the problem of the relay network blowing up and leaving all your choices meaningless. :sigh: Honestly, I can't see a way for them to keep that in the ending and properly rewarding player choice at the same time, those two things appear mutually exclusive.

Which pretty much sums up why I wasn't holding out any hope for a truly "fixed" ending since it'd require them to redo more or less everything from just after Kai Leng is killed to the London beam charge and of course everything after Anderson dies.

As it stands all they can do it patch up a few plot holes and add some extraneous explanations. but like you say, if the relays all blow and everyone you care about is hopelessly stranded or dead...who the hell cares?

Bottom line, any ending that totally excludes even the possibility of this becoming a reality, is, IMO, wrong. As far as I'm concerned my Femshep destroyed the Reapers, passed out from blood loss next to Anderson and hallucinated all that other crap. The relays didn't blow, the reapers all shut down, EDI and the Geth are fine and Shepard was found alive after a few hours when other survivors on the Citadel found their way to her...that's my story and I'm sticking to it...coz it's MY story damnit! ;)

Perhaps there is more hope than we thought...

yup! Depending on your ending, rebuilding the relays is completely likely.

yes but with some sacrifices depending on the end you chose. Ending is never perfect but Shep/crew reunited is possible :)

Take these with a grain of salt, she's a community manager and not directly involved with developing the DLC, but she was responsible with collecting fan feedback for it.

Well... I'm cautiously optimistic that this new DLC will give some closure/explanation of the ending. They seem to be taking some time (at least try) to do it right. Above all, I hope that they address the plothole of the Normandy (and squadmates!) not being where they should be.

In the meantime, we'll just have to content ourselves with this ending:

I sold my copy to Gamestop for $23 dollars. I used this money as a down deposit on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The review of this game in the XBOX magazine states that your choices do matter in this game, and that there are consequences for your choices.

it is true that no one starves etc. All that is already implied in the current end. DLC will clarify.

QEC [in response to: "It's not implied in the current end though. Joker and co. are stranded and the fleets are on Earth."]

depending on your choices :) [reply to: "so Shepard can see Liara again?!"]
She also confirmed that, yes, the shot of Shepard breathing in the "Destroy" option with a certain level of EMS is indeed a real, living Shepard. Producer Mike Gamble has confirmed that the DLC will not simply be a few cinematics, and that contacting voice actors is underway.

Considering all this new info, the initial announcement of this DLC was ridiculously bad. Initially it seemed like they were just going to throw in a few extra cutscenes, but if they're actually adding gameplay, giving proper differentiation to the endings, making it possible for Shepard to live and to rebuild galactic civilisation (and not create a 10,000 year dark age), and find some way to explain the most egregious plotholes in the existing ending, that means that they will have addressed most of the problems the fans have. Sadly, we'll still have to put up with the star child and his crap, but if we're being realistic then they were never going to get rid of that. I'm just hoping that we get to question him some more before making the choice rather than blindly accepting his words.

And I've got to give props to Bioware for seemingly listening to feedback and releasing additional content for free. Yes, the game should never have been released with the ending that's on the disc, and they should never be allowed to forgot that mistake. But they could have walked away with our money, or tried to charge us for this new DLC, and they've decided not to. The extended endings may still be crap, but at least they appear to be trying.

Kotaku talked to a BioWare spokesperson:
"Much of the focus of the Extended Cut is to expand on the variety of consequences of player choices and degrees of success," the spokesperson said, "so, with the new content, the player's choices should result in a much more varied experience."

The new ending content will be woven into the game and should be accessible seamlessly. We were told that players "should be able to grab a save file before the endgame and experience the new content from there."
There's also a brief mention about this DLC pushing back development on other DLC, but "several projects are underway."
