Marvel's "Fear Itself"

Just finished reading issue three and so far I have to say this was the most well rounded of the three yet. Things still have a manic pace to them (I'm starting to get the impression this has been done by design) but there was some "quieter" scenes in this issue. It seems that we're going to be in for the most action oriented issue next month as Marvel has been promoting a huge brawl for issue four. Fear Its Self also seems like one of those events where you do have to follow some of the tie-ins to get the depth part of the story. Like for instance Invincible Iron Man is supposed to have the conversation between Odin and Tony after Odin appears and tells Stark he is listening. Something still feels off to me about this. I'm enjoying the art work, and it was nice to see Steve back in uniform despite the fact that pretty much everyone knew this was coming.

I never recall him ever being written as an asshole before.

Now h wants to remove the Serpents food source rather than attack him directly?

This is why Loki didn't have his arms rpped out back when tan lee was writing.

Odin's brother is a dick too.

I'm enjoying Flashpoint more.
 
He is that but then I've never been fond of Odin anyways. The Serpent has been a totally unlikeable character as well.
 
I liked Odin when JMS was writing him, but then again I liked Thor too.

Fraction seems to be in the habit of making his characters utterly unlikeable.
 
Odin's always been an asshole. Before the Thor movie came out, I went back and read the entire Lee/Kirby run, and it's full of Odin doing entirely capricious things depending on whatever his mood is at the time, and an amazing number of times the only explanation on offer is because, well, he's Odin.
 
Odin has always been an asshole, but he's never been willing to take it to the extreme he wants to in Fear Itself.
 
i don't really care for Fear Itself or Flashpoint. Fear Itself #4 was more of the same meh event. not much happening really. and Steve is immediately back in the Cap uniform? that was quick. sad thing is, like Flashpoint, i enjoy some of the tie-ins more than the main book.
 
It's hard being a dad when one kid is a psychopath and the other is an idiot.

Note, Balder is the only mentally healthy child to spring from the allfathers sack, and that's probably just because nurture won out over nature because he was deprived of that particular father in his life.

What about Ares Kid? God of Fear working for Nick Fury (Did he wander off? OH! He died! I remember him meeting his dad in Greek Heaven. But that just means that he has transcended demigod status and that he can come back to Earth at full power surely?).

And is that Therapist who used to work for the Initiative still above ground? He would Give Fear physical form. in the new world order he would be insanely powerful now?
 
Of course Steve is immediately in uniform after Bucky's death...there's a film around the corner ;) Plus the story is practically designed to be all about Steve back as Captain America in my opinion. Who else better to conquer fear?
 
The thing is shouldn't the culmination of years of Captain America story take place in Cap's book? Or at least come from the pen of Cap's writer?

oh, i have no problem with Steve coming back...i just hate that it was at the expense of Bucky. still irritated about that.

and to anyone who read issue four...what did you think of Tony's 'sacrifice'? i thought it was way over the top myself.
 
^ Agreed. I don't think we'll be dealing too much with it though. I think he did that just to get Odin's attention which worked.

The editor at Marvel hated Winter Soldier since Bru and Joe Q went over his head and approved bringing him back. I think it's his big "fuck you" now that Quesada is gone.
 
is Odin even aware enough of Tony to understand he has a drinking problem though? shouldn't mortals be beneath his notice?
 
Not significant mortals like Tony Stark, someone who Odin I assume has interacted with before. He's a god, they're supposed to be omniscient. Therefor on the fact of that basis he'd be aware. Also it's very possible that Thor has told Odin in the past about Stark's drinking problem. Unlikely, but possible.
 
Have you heard of Lent?

Agardian's it would seem to feed off human experience.

Odins "brother' is being uberpowered by the overclocking of the human attribute he's devoted to.

Fear.

Is Odin the god of sacrifice (He gave up an eye for wisdom.) or the god of booze (bit of a gut. You ever wonder if Loki is his biological kid? That he didn't cuckold that frostgiant which started that war to begin with to get his kid back?)?

Besides, maybe Stark got a new liver since he told Congress that he couldn't get drunk with his mechanical liver he had to replace his real one with after it died.

Paladin still has Odins Spear.

Odds are that he can do some real damage with that, even to the Serpent.

The Man thing is going Batshit.

Even if he's not feeling fear personally, other peoples fear is coursing through him.

Well this drivel finally concluded yesterday...sort of...since Marvel is adding three point one issues and a couple of more mini-series. I still don't know what to think of this since the pacing of the book totally ruined it for me. There were way too many tie-ins that you probably had to read in order to enjoy the full thing and I didn't do that. I stated before that this hopefully will read better when released in trade format which I think was one of the reasons why it was paced as it was. The big moment I suppose was what happened to Thor and Asgard. The epilogue seeds other books that will be starting soon as well like Defenders, Incredible Hulk, and Battle Scars. I just had a weird vibe all through this book, the same feeling that I had when reading Flashpoint. I really hope that Marvel's Big 2012 event isn't like this at all.
 
I was jazzed at the start of Fear Itself, but it ended with a whimper for me.0
Thor just had a movie come out, and he's in Avengers next summer, and Thor 2 after that... and he just got a new comic series... is he REALLY going to stay dead? I fully expect him to come back in this "7.2" issue.

The tie-ins seemed to basically do nothing. All the Worthy were still there at the end of the series. It only affected some characters like Juggernaut, Colossus, the Thunderbolts...
 
I doubt what happened to Thor will stay permanent. I'm guessing he will be part of the focus of next year's event. That is just a guess.
