Marvel Teases The Age of X!

My initial reaction to the teaser image was "What the hell is Solid Snake doing in an X-man comic?" until someone pointed out it was supposed to be Gambit.

I found the discussion at the panel about "Will Marvel drop their prices to $2.99 like DC?" more interesting in that link. The big run on of excuses of "Do you want your LCS to go out of business?". Really, I want a more affordable hobby and you say its the little guy that I'll hurt? Marvel is going to get their money, LCS be damned.
After some noises at NYCC that Marvel was going to drop their prices to $2.99, as DC had announced, Marvel has completely backpedaled from that. They're dropping the price on one title -- Incredible Hulk, and their message seems to be that if anyone took their announcement of $2.99 prices at NYCC as a sign that there would be an across-the-board reduction a la DC Comics then they were clearly mistaken and misreading Marvel's intentions.

Do we know anything about this for sure or is it speculation at this point? i.e. whether it's an alternate future or something like making the xmen more heroic (less dark, wolverine-as-assassin stories) and so on?

We know next to nothing about it yet except for the teaser posters because like the "Death of Spider-Man" story/arc/whatever Marvel has chosen not to comment on this yet. Just pure speculation at this point. Also to comment on the crossover thing...companies also I have noticed taken the opportunity of their crossover events to use characters that haven't been popular or been ignored for a while and elevate them to a new status. I would use for example Mera in "Blackest Night" has been elevated to a status that she has previous never enjoyed before even to the point of a "Smallville" appearance. "Infinite Crisis" was a chance to introduce a new Blue Beetle that has steadily gained popularity. I would argue that this would be the same case for the entire Justice League International. In Marvel's case look at all the B-listers that have been elevated or been revampled, the mutant characters elevated, Blade is now a fixture again thanks to that lame vampire storyline. Just because the plots maybe not have been entertaining doesn't mean they haven't served other purposes for the characters. I would use Bucky as an example in "Captain America" as well. Namor in "X-Men".

Yeah, once I skimmed down to that point and saw that, I knew they were gonna pander to the money, so I stopped reading. If I had been at that con, I would have answered the question with "Yes", just to drive home that their audience is the FANS, not retailers.

^ So not the topic of this thread.

Quick update...Marvel talks about Age of X here.

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/next-big-thing-age-of-x-101115.html

Okay so it looks like "Age of X" is some kind of weird funky alternate reality that isn't an actual alternate reality. I was little confused by what the panel was talking about. I'm sort of leaning towards not being interested in this now. I'll check out Age of X:Alpha though when it comes out.

God, enough with the crossovers? Just concentrate on doing good comics, Marvel! There are a few but it's hard to breathe new life into series that go on continously for fifty-plus years!

I'm through with Marvel crossovers. Daredevil is the best Marvel comic and I was thrilled when they announced Shadowland. Instead, they managed to turn a DD storyline into a gigantic piece of shit. They undercut any risk-taking by having Matt possesesed and turning him into a two-dimensional generic villain controlled by an uber-beast. They proved with that serious that they had no committment whatsoever to good storytelling and taking risks. All these crossovers are is weak ass stories and weak shock value for the sake of weak shock value. But hey, they have to get more of the customers money somehow...

Crossovers happen because people buy them. Simple as that, also I thought it was pretty obvious that Matt was possessed or that was under some kind of demonic influence.

I agree, the crossovers & event stuff is ridiculous & has really gotten out of hand these last few years. But damn...Chamber.

I don't think it's gotten out of hand, there's always been one or two major event per year for the last several years. I don't know what the big deal or outrage of them. If it bothers you so much don't buy them. Simple as that.

So... this is another big What If story? Ugh. I loved AoA but I generally hate those things. Didn't care about House of M. I only care if it turns out they bring back Jean alive and well to the real world out of this reality.

Marvel has been a little unclear about the status of this reality. In previous interviews they've said it's not an alternative reality but has clear connections to the 616 universe.

I think they've gone to the well too many times with Phoenix. The character is overdone and hasn't been interesting in years and years.
