News Marvel gets Conan back.

I see.

Still, I prefer the RHE-verse not be connected to modern day stories like the Marvel superheroes. Howard used some shaky theories as the basis of both his Thurian and Hyborean Ages, as well as the stories of Bran Mak Morn, that work very well for a Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery setting, but which get really uncomfortable if getting closer to reality as a connection to a modern day setting would do.

Besides, the old Marvel stuff was based on the L. Sprague de Camp version of Howard's work, and not on the original texts. I also wasn't a fan of Roy Thomas idea of Conan being shown a vision of becoming king and therefore seeking that destiny, as the original stories by Howard were very much about the self-reliance of man and against the idea of destiny.
He was that, also Conan wasn't looking to be king like an Arthur or Aragorn because he saw civilization as corrupting. Kingship in Howard for Conan was best summed up by Kull when he takes his throne 'By this axe, I rule.'

I don’t understand how anybody can own the underlying rights to REH’s works; he died in the 1930’s. Any of his writings published in his lifetime have been public domain for decades.

What’s to stop Dark Horse from continuing to publish newly-created Conan pastiches even if Marvel is also publishing them?

They just need to set up in europe - where companies do indeed write Conan comics because they are in the public domain:

There were also a few bits in Howard's later stories that were set at the time shortly before Conan became king were he basically went "I've been a vagabond, a pirate, a cossack, a soldier, a mercinary, and a leader of armies. But I haven't been king, yet. Might try that." Howard's Conan was quite casual about the idea, not at all like somebody seeking their destiny.

Huh. Didn't know that.

CBR| Marvel Comics Regains Conan License

Starting in January 2019.

This kind of pisses me off, especially in the larger context of Marvel being part of Disney. I sure hope they don't go after the film rights, as well.
But also because Dark Horse has done a fantastic job with Conan, from the early Kurt Busiek & Cary Nord run up to the current crossover with Wonder Woman (something we sure wouldn't have gotten at Marvel). And their collections are great, as well, including the reprint of Marvel stuff.

The only thing Marvel could do to win me over was if they did a Savage Sword-style black and white magazine.

First Star Wars, now Conan. If Marvel buys the Buffy license, we know for sure they're out to destroy Dark Horse.
Trump 2020

Back in the day, Conan was rather heavily integrated into the Marvel Universe. It was like Marvel thought they owned the IP out right. Which made continuity and reprints a bit awkward when they lost the license. I guess all those stories are back in play

Hey, Star Wars took place a long time ago; the Hyborian Age was, what, somewhere around 10,000 BCE? Maybe they were contemporaries! :D

There's a bit of debate among fandom. Howard never gave any specifics beyond the Hyborean Age being set between the First Great Cataclysm (causing the Sinking of Atlantis), and the Second (shifting the continents into their current forms). Talking for the classic Marvel comics, they used the template of L. Sprague de Camp, which is the 10,000 BC setting you mentioned. REH scholar Dale Rippke, on the other hand, argued for the Hyborean Age to be set before the last glacial period, at least 32,000 years.

Obviously, this is me showing off my nerdiness, as it really doesn't matter at all.

C.B. Cebulski announces two more Conan titels!

Following the previously announced Conan the Barbarian starting in January, February will see the launch of Savage Sword of Conan, with Age of Conan starting in March.

Age of Conan sounds like it might be more of a spin-off title, being set in the Hyborean Age while not actually starring Conan. Could be the book to adapt (and finish) Wolves Beyond the Border, as well as telling stories around the events described in REH's Hyborean Age essay.

Savage Sword better be the b&w magazine format title it's supposed to be, of I'll cry bloody murder. But if it will be that, it's the book I'm looking forward to the most. And I'd probably go bonkers with excitement if they got Mark Schultz to do some work for it.

^You Ninja'd me in the time it took for me to find this thread.

At any rate, unlike yourself, I'm kinda stoked at the re-establishing of Conan into Marvel continuity. Even though I have since read original REH works, my introduction to the Hyborian Age characters and mythology was through the old comics, and I geeked out over the smallest crossover elements.

I wonder if the Serpent/Cobra Crown will be a part of the story? Wanda was a central element of those old Avengers and Marvel Two-in-One stories that featured the Crown, and she seems to be taking center stage in this crossover as well.

Conan should not be done live action any more. I want to see CGI bring Frazetta to life--and Dore's Inferno as well.

Maybe Bran Mak Morn

The solicitations for March are out, and the third title "Age of Conan" will actually be a 5-part mini-series "Age of Conan: Bêlit", telling the backstory of the Queen of the Black Coast, written by Tini Howard and art by Kate Niemczyk.

My guess is that "Age of Conan" will work as a label for several mini-series telling the stories of supporting characters.
I know neither the writer or the artist, so I can't judge. I think, though, I may wait for the collected edition for this.

For those who may not have heard yet, the Marvel Conan books will also feature serialized novellas, which I find quite an appealing idea.
