Marvel develping "Guardians of the Galaxy" flick!

I think people place too much emphasis on the "name recognition" factor sometimes. Look at BLADE, HELLBOY, THE MASK, MEN IN BLACK, GHOST RIDER, etc. Most people had never heard of the original comic book versions, but the movies made money anyway.

If name recognition was all that matters, then SUPERMAN RETURNS should have wiped up the floor with IRON MAN, and THE HULK should have been much more successful than THOR.

Didn't work that way . . . .

I guess I need to check my fan-girl hat at the door because I've never heard of Guardians of the Galaxy. It doesn't sound bad. After all these oh-so-serious, dark and dramatic superhero drama fests, I'd like to see something more like in the vein of Batman: Brave and the Bold on the big screen - something fun and bright - instead of gritty.

And they overestimate how many superheroes have name recognition to begin with. In the months before the Iron Man debut, I recall many comments from non-comic-book-readers (ie, normal people) who kept asking 'who is that supposed to be?' and predicting the movie would fail because 'nobody has heard of that guy.' :rommie:

The general public knows Superman, Batman, maybe X-Men and Spidey before the movies. I wouldn't lay odds on anybody else.

Alpha Flight is sort of an X-men spinoff, as they were introduced in that comic, and have a strong relationship to the X-men due to their connection to Wolverine. However, they are not all mutants. They're sort of mixed like the Avengers.

The old couple in X-men Origins Wolverine were the X-men movie version of the Hudsons, who are the main Alpha Flight leaders in the comics. However for obvious reasons they'd have to change that for any Alpha Flight sequel, kind of like the Emma Frost thing.

Exactly. Comics fans tend to overestimate how "A-list" some characters are. IRON MAN may be a big deal in the Marvel Universe, but the average moviegoer had barely heard of him before the film. There's also a generational factor. My dad knows Batman and Superman and Green Lantern, but didn't have a clue who the X-Men were.

Heck, just last week, my next door neighbor got the Green Hornet and the Green Lantern mixed up . . . .

Ah, I see. "It's just they're terribly comfortable. I think everyone will be wearing them in the future."
Culture doesnt have to be comfortable :p

Oddly enough it was the males of the Royal Family who usually wore masks. Crystal didn't and Medusa ditched her's early on. Triton is the only royal male without a mask ( to my recollection) Kree Accusers and soldiers also wear masks. And as any good geek knows, the Kree created the Inhumans.

From what I recall the Guardians are pretty much the last of their races. The rest having been wiped out by the Badoon. Not exactly a fun and bright concept.

I'll bet folks know Wonder Woman because she's a girl. Hulk - maybe. Flash - marginal.

I'd say most people know WW and Hulk because they had successful tv shows. Ditto Batman before Burton, Keaton etc - the average person didn't think of a grim avenger, they thought of Adam West, Ka-Pow!, 'dinna-dinna-dinna' theme tune and Robin's 'Holy Something or other!' one-liners.

The Flash tv show didn't have the same impact as the above three shows and thus the character isn't all that well known to the non-comic book reading punter.

So tell me where a Racoon ranks on the general coolness scale? Granted.. i know nothing about him (and too lazy and uninterested to check on Wikipedia) but i guess he's far below Blade (a weapon and a kickass Vampire/Vampire Hunter), Hellboy (demon and de facto Son of Satan), Men in Black (awesome comedy with big name actors) and Ghost Rider (not so good movie but very cool main character with awesome visuals). Mask was terrible but that's just my opinion and the movie only made money because of Carrey in his prime.

This is not about who's got virtually the biggest name but the perceived coolness of the name and Guardians of the Galaxy sounds cool enough but i doubt they can pull off a story that lifts up the premise and downplays the more silly 60s era style when it was developed (much like the silly Superman pants from the 40s where that was ok but try changing that and you might as well kiss your ass goodbye).

Iron Man worked because of Robert Downey jr. and a pretty good script (my opinion) on top of the basic premise of a high tech weapon suit that just looks cool and is perfect for todays audience who want to see cool stuff. The same can happen with Guardians if they indeed get lucky to have awesome characters and actors and can pump out a good story and handle the release well but these are many ifs that need to work to make this movie a hit and i seriously doubt that.

Yeah, i saw that after I posted. I was going off the idea of a character named Rocket Racoon or whatever sounded fun.

I don't think Guardians is as actor-dependent as Iron Man, which could have been a crashing bore with the wrong actor. You got a bunch of crazy looking people from various planets and that's just inherently colorful. The challenge will be to keep it relatable to audiences and not just bizarre.

IMO, if you have a Guardians movie, you need a walking, trash talking raccoon. Just like you need a kickass Star-Lord costume. Just like you need hot, beautiful lesbians (Moondragon and Phyla-Vell).

You left out the crucial walking, talking tree-man.

"I am Groot!"

I think that was the old Guardians. The new team is the same name, different concept.

Re: the Badoon-- I could see them being used in the movie, but the real villain would have to be Korvac. Or should that wait for the Avengers/Guardians cross-over movie?;)

Do you mean Starlord or Starhawk? Both were Marvel space heroes, but Starhawk was the one who hung out with the Guardians.

StarLORD was the leader of the most recent incarnation of the Guardians (set in the 21st century).

Are all these movies Marvel is planning outside of Spiderman and the X-men going to be set in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe?

I think it would be cool if they are because you could have little Easter eggs, cameos various team-ups and possibly setting up some epic crossover movies like Secret Wars,Civil War etc.
