A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Now that the first season of Star Trek: Discovery is over, Sonequa Martin-Green spoke about her character, and what worked best on...

It's only human nature but what the actress chose as 'worked best' is the final episode and Vulcan Hello. Entirely self-serving for her character.

This quote makes me question what show she was on: "It’s just really being able to show our youth such a strong, heroic, sacrificial, utopian picture. It means everything."

I'd rather not hear her give another speech again. I like Discovery a LOT (pretty obvious) but honestly a good deal of discovery was the Lorca and Mirror Georgiou show. Without them they're going to have to figure out how to use Martin-Green better in the next season, or hope for another scene stealer to make up the difference. No more speeches and uplifting "this is what starfleet" does moments. I think everyone gets that now.

I honestly feel the other way around. She's the worst regular character except *maybe* Joann Owosekun - and she probably just needs more screen time to pull ahead.
Did you want to add the Comms officer or is there a paper bag test involved in that criteria?

Well, it certainly describes the show I watched. Practically the whole season reinforced the values of preserving life, being brave in the face of danger and fear, and standing by your principles, as well as showing acutely what not standing by your principles looks like.

No, I don’t think they do actually. And honestly, I think various conversations on this board prove that many many people in fact don’t get it.

Star Trek is not “Hard Men Making Hard Decisions”. Star Trek is not “Situational Morality”. Star Trek is not “Out principals are important, but only until their inconvient”. Star Trek is, we will do the right thing, even if it costs us everything.

And yeah, we (and the characters in the series) need to reminded of that, and reminded often, because we are all, just one action away from becoming Terrans.

Exactly. Enjoyed Burnham's growth and development. Actually look forward to more of the character next season.

I loved how, even as early as “Context is for Kings” she refused Lorca’s initial invitation to join the crew because she believed they were working on a biological weapon, which was against Star Fleet principals. She was absolutely willing to return to prison than be a part of something she believed to be unethical.

Again, exactly. I love her willingness to sacrifice herself for her principles, including going to prison.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that, but in case it serves as an answer, I'll go ahead and throw out there that I find both Owosekun and Bryce pleasant enough to look at, and, that physical appearance doesn't factor heavily into how interested I am in a character. Saru, for instance, is one of my favorites, and I'm not "eating Kelpian" anytime soon, if you know what I mean and I think you do. :)
