Marmaduke? Marmaduke?! Really?...

What the hezmana is a marmaduke?

Marmaduke is an over-sized Great Dane canine in a one-panel daily comic strip. Jokes often involve... well none.

But the "gag" is that Marmaduke is large (on his hind-legs he's nearly as tall as his adult human masters) and carries with him all of the problems a giant dog would have. He likes sitting on the couch.

It's also worth nothing that in the comic Marmaduke, other than being a little large and having some human-like mannerisms and proclivities, is a "normal" dog. He doesn't get any thought balloons (like in Garfield) nor does he talk to his masters in dialogue balloons (like in Get Fuzzy. Now there's a movie!) the only "dialogue" he gets is the occasion bark/"Arf!" "dialogue" balloon. (The strip is one of those where the "punchline" or dialogue of the characters is presented in a "caption" under the strip.)

It's so funny. I love that strip! It's so funny when Marmaduke...umm, when Marmaduke...oh, when Marmaduke gets taken for a walk and starts running, his owner being dragged behind him! That was so funny the first 263 times, it never gets old!

Best comic strip ever.

What about when one of his masters wants to sit on the couch or the recliner, but Marmaduke is sitting there! Or! Or! When the father comes home, Marmaduke jumps on the guy and slobbers on his face! Oh, Marm, you never change!

Know what, the above are right. If I was writing this crap for however-many years and some studio wanted to pay a couple million for naming rights, I'd say, "You want to name your crappy talking-dog movie after my crappy one-panel comic strip? And you'll pay me $5 million to do it? Where do I sign?"

Oh. He also rubs his owners one off.

And he rapes strangers on the street:

where's the Peanuts movie?

At least with Peanuts there's potential for some actual substantial plotlines, though I can't imagine a movie made today being able to equal the darkness of A Charlie Brown Christmas (that's not a joke -- I've had numerous discussions with people about how dark that cartoon is if you stop to think about it). I'm actually surprised no one's done it yet; I can only imagine (and hope) the death of Charles Schulz had something to do with why no one's picked up the rights yet.

I think we're also overdue for an Archie movie. They did a TV film a number of years back (with Lauren Holly of NCIS playing Betty, IIRC ) . Archie seems to be hot again because of the wedding and all. Of course today it'd probably become a clone of Gossip Girl or Glee though if they were to cast someone like Katie McGrath of Merlin as Veronica, I might rent it...
