Manny Ramierez suspended 50 games

Well, this was a bit of a shocker, but Manny Ramierez was just suspended 50 games for using PEDs. Details on that not out yet, but here's the link:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4148907

Wouldn't have thought he'd have done it. Just such a good hitter already, why go there? Unless he thought he was getting older and losing his edge, but his numbers don't say that...

Awesome, I was really hoping someday we could add that douchebag to the list of people who cheat.

$20 million for a cheater, just doesn't seem right does it?

Wow, I was just coming here to post about that. He's the first big namer to get 50 games. Mostly it's been minor leaguers or fringe players so far.

See you after the all star break Manny.

I think this is bigger than the A-Rod, Giambi, Bonds stuff because that was all leaked after the fact and took place before an official polciy/penalties were in place. This guy got nailed with his hand in the cookie jar.

I don't really care who's juicing or not, but its always interesting when a big name gets busted.

It really boggles my mind that in this current atmosphere that a big name dude like Manny would risk something so stupid.

Oh well, you get what you deserve. Sayonara, Manny-san!

I wonder how in the world he thought he'd get away with it. Maybe he just wanted a vacation.

HOLY FUCK! THERE IS A GOD!

The Red Sox win World Series and Manny fucks himself over after fucking over the Red Sox.

Eat dirt fuckward!

Well, that's just Manny Being Manny. As a Giants fan who will probably watch the team be swept this weekend, this is damn good news. :guffaw::guffaw:

Well, that's just Manny Being Barry.

:)

Unfortunately, that's true too. BTW, just so there is no accusing of homerism here, I knew Bonds were Juiced, and I've almost forgotten he did break the record. This whole era in which we live in in baseball with banned drugs and such was crap.

Fortunately though, I do think what has been going on in Baseball lately has been good. Small ball is coming back, the whole idea of stealing bases instead of going for the long ball is regaining prominence, and I think it's a better game.

It sucks since I have him on my team in the yearly TBBS fantasy league, but I kind figured he'd eventually screw up in some way. Wasn't expecting a 50 day suspension, though.

Well, THAT didn't take too long to turn into random, baseless witch-hunting!

To answer a fairly obvious question with the fairly obvious answer: Ortiz is sucking at the moment because he's getting older, not in great shape, and his skills may have begun to erode. Battling back from knee and wrist injuries, and appears to be in a bit of a funk.

You can TRY to make some sort of half-assed attempt to say it's all steroid-related, and maybe he's quit using, but firing up the old "brain" for a second would seem to destroy that argument. When did he start really hitting well? 2003. When did serious drug testing start? Anyone? 2003. His biggest power year? 2006, when testing was VERY prevalent. If he was hitting big BEFORE 2003, and THEN dropped off, you'd have the beginnings of a point, but since his whole power cycle was AFTER drug testing started, seems more like wishful thinking than reality. Short answer to why he was awesome in 2004, but not so awesome right now? It was 5 years ago. 2004 was his 2nd year as a star player, he was in his prime. Now, he's on the downside. Still will have flashes of the old Ortiz, but the big threat is on the way out.

I think what you'er seeing here is what USED to happen! Older players, or those not in great shape, with skills starting to erode. Look back at numbers for guys in his body type, it was pretty common before steroids, and it'll be back.

The biggest damning argument would be if people like Ortiz, Vlad, etc were NOT eroding in skills, but still tearing it up, or getting better. Roger Clemens-like. You're SUPPOSED to get slower as you age, that's how it works...

On the other hand, he was batting in the 100s last year at this time, and still managed to finish at about .275 with 30HRs, so maybe he'll snap out of it and make the adjustment again.

hell, Derek Jeter isn't the hitter he once was. He was awesome back in 2003, and could still play defense decently too. Steroids? Todd Helton was a monster, now not so much. John Smoltz was an all-star closer AND starter, and this year had to try and prove himself to get a contract.

Next up? David Ortiz.

Any evidence to support that statement? Or is that just blind speculation? Or wishes?

Interesting to say the least...

Not wanting to be accusatory or anything, but why is Ortiz sucking this year? Why was he so clutch in 2004 but in 2009 he can't hit the back side of a barn? Just asking.

Well as someone who watches the guy every night he is sucking because his swing is out of wack. He isn't keeping his wrists back when he swings, and his bat has slowed because of it. I don't think steroids causes you to go from hitting homeruns hitting pop ups to the infield, which he is doing a lot of.

Look, I know he had a huge jump in power numbers when he went from Minn. to Boston, but if someone actually sits and reads about why those numbers changed one can become informed about it. He did not get a huge number of ABs in Minnesota, and the hitting coach there changed his swing from what he naturally had. When he came to Boston, the hitting coach brought his swing back to a more natural one, and taught him how to plug a huge hold he had on low inside fastballs.

Im not saying that he did not do PEDs, but it gets annoying when every time someone comes out with another PED discovery, someone always goes, well David Ortiz is next, despite to evidence to prove it.

Well, the guy made so many other teams look bad, and was that much better than everyone when he was on top, makes sense for others to want to kick him now that he's on the way down. Plus, if they say he did steroids, they can even pretend that he wouldn't have beat them otherwise, and it makes them feel better about themselves.

Aging sluggers with crappy body types breaking down isn't a shocking new twist! It's what used to happen all the time, before people took steroids to prolong the end. Get used to it, it's coming back now...

Why do children speak badly when they are 2, but can talk really well when they are 7?

Because it's 5 years later!

So everyone who was once great gets worse and it must be because he used steroids!

I think it's time for everyone to accept that just about everyone in the major leagues uses or has used some sort of performance-enhancing substances.

In fact, I'm pretty sure there are even drugs that enhance your scrappiness, and Nick Punto and David Eckstein are freebasing them.
