I was going to make a post about that myself. I saw the movie again today and noticed this on my repeat viewing. It looks very much like a TOS communicator.

There's an officer in engineering, either on the Kelvan or the Enterprise talking on one as well. He was holding it flat in his hand and you could clearly see the cover open.

I recall Winona's communicator having a black lid, not a shiny gold one. But it's not the 2258 Enterprise communicator, because I don't recall it having a round cutout for the display screen.

There's photos of the new film's props for ma display at the Arclight here. There's images of the Kelvin comm, as well as a phaser from that time period that didn't show on screen. ETA: Psion is right about the lid being solid.

It wasn't exactly the TOS communicator, but as those pics point out, it was close enough. And it showed on film since I immediately noticed the similarity.

First thing I commented on to a friend next to me..yes it really looked like TOS communicator..the guy in engineering definitely had one.

That's what I saw. I think it was intended to suggest a TOS communicator but wasn't an exact replica.
