Malcolm

I can imagine Harris/Section 31 looking at a long list of young Starfleet officers to recruit and watching them. They would scratch out the popular and brash young officers. Then they saw young Malcolm, quiet, studious, rather nerdy and liked to keep to himself, but brilliant in tactical and weaponry subjects. Perfect candidate.

In one of the IDW comics based on the nuTrek characters, Section 31 tried to recruit Hikaru Sulu, whom I think has rather similar qualities to Reed.

I love Enterprise, I am just watching it again now it's on Netflix UK.. I forgot just how bad Malcolm is. I'm not sure if it's his acting or the role he was given but he often irritates me! What do you guys think?
I've been episode hopping, so I haven't seen all of the episodes on Amazon, but I just watched the episode where Malcolm got into a knock down drag out fight with the security chief when they're at war with the Xindi. He's definitely a character I'm finding it harder to understand than the others. His allergies and his perfectionism and his standoffishness are stereotypical stuck up Brit. I would not have a hard time picturing him on Frasier as a third brother to Frasier and Niles but then he does something like that..

His mother mentions it in 'Silent Enemy', when Captain Archer is trying to find out what his favourite food is.

Reed is an English name. Wiki says it refers to having a ruddy complexion.
Reed has separate Dutch, English and Scottish origins.
The surname Reed was first found in Aberdeenshire ... located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland where the name has been found since the 14th century. Ancient charters show the name as Rufus (Latinized) ... in 1204; and ... in 1259. For the purposes of Clan identification, the family name Reed is officially a sept of the Clan Robertson... Spelling variations include: Ried, Reid, Read, Reed and others.

Two Scottish musical groups include a pair of Reid brothers (The Proclaimers and The Jesus & Mary Chain).

Also, this site put Reid at 11 in the top 20 popular surnames in Scotland:

He reminds me very much of early Bashir.

I loved Lt. Malcolm Reed because he was a man of action and he was willing to put himself in danger just to save any member of the crew including the Captain. He was also a guy who could think on his feet. He DID create the "Reed Alert" for the ship and he also created the "stun" setting on the phasers. As for Trip - if the Enterprise NX-01 is to be believed, Trip was the First Chief Engineer on a Starship (who unfortunately died before the Federation was formed) and that would mean that Scotty would have had to learned his engineering "miracles" probably by learning what Trip did (before Scotty became an engineer on the Enterprise 1701). I think if the Producers had done a better job with both characters(it was their fault about that Southern accent) they could have had a hell of a lot more stories with the two working together on ANY ship.

I think "Minefield" is a pretty good Reed episode. The Section 31 idea had potential.

I think he had enormous potential as a 'dark side' character if the producers/writers had taken the time to pay any attention to the more junior officers of the cast. Unfortunately they fixated on T/T'P/A to the point of hardly considering the other characters. Take 'Acquisition' for instance; the ship was boarded and practically stripped, and who do they not call on to take charge of the situation? Oh, that's right - the ship's Tactical Officer!

In the Rise of the Federation books Malcolm Reed is now a Captain and Travis Mayweather is his first Officer.
