I think people tend to conflate Spock with Vulcans. They assume all Vulcans to be like Spock. But the episodes featuring them tell a different story, They are often shown to be unlikeable and antagonistic towards our heroes. I think Surak is one of the few exceptions, where he's a "nice guy" from the start.IIRC, the few times we saw Vulcans in DS9, they weren't portrayed as too likable either.
Yeah, but y'all seem so happy (well, kind of pissy sometimes) talking about Vulcans. Looks like Malcolm has been tossed in the "Who?" bin with Travis.
He was fond of T'Pol's butt. What if Malcolm had dated a Vulcan? I can imagine it. In fact, I can imagine him finding even Vulcans a little too emotionally open for his liking.![]()
(emphasis mine)…Simple gayness between humans in the far future is positively tame compared to this stuff. What about nu-kirk being in bed with two cat-chicks with tails? Get TF over it already. ST isn't way behind- it's light years ahead. Personally I can't understand why humans want to go to Risa and screw some alien with a weird forehead. To me that's far more repugnant than being gay.
I also found him a bit off-putting for no reason I can put a finger on. As a character there was nothing really wrong with him- I think it was the actor playing him. Not nearly as bad as Bakula's portrayal of Archer, though. Although for the life of me now I can't really imagine anyone else in the role.
Agreed! (and it appears that it's safe for me to return to this thread, as we are focused on my favorite character again!)What if Malcolm had dated a Vulcan? I can imagine it. In fact, I can imagine him finding even Vulcans a little too emotionally open for his liking.![]()
No worries! I was actually following along with the Vulcan conversation...I just didn't have anything to add! (Though I did pop over to the new thread to make a comment)Welcome back, Willow, and apologies for the thread wandering away from your guy for a bit. But Mal might have understood all the fascination with Vulcans.![]()
A lot of it is a class thing. Some Brits are proud of despising anyone who sounds posh. It's an interesting switch from the previous prejudice against working class and regional accents, but just as silly. The really odd thing about Malcolm is the radically different reactions among Brits. Some hate that he's a stiff upper lip stereotype. But some of his biggest fans are also British.

Believe me, as a Brit I can assure you that Malcolm's accent is definitely upper-class. You would never, ever mistake him for someone who grew up poor or badly educated!Malcolm isn't even that posh. He sounds nothing like the queen or Pickering from My Fair Lady. Any Brits in the house with some more insight?
