Making pizza

So who else here makes their own pizzas? Whether its putting toppings on a pre-made crust or even making the dough yourself, like I am now.

Do you prefer your own pizzas? Store bought? Dominos/Pizza Hut/Local chain pizza?

Personally I consider my pizzas to be a slightly different category, but we also buy from the local Panago. I think my wife and I are snobbish enough that we want good quality pizzas and aren't into cardboard with tomato sauce 5 for $10 type deals :)

Who else around here makes their own?

Homemade pizza is the best. My girlfriend taught me and since then nothing tastes better. I even got my family so hooked that my sister wanted to know how to make them so she could take over now that I've moved out.

I get PH but it's all crap imo.

Pizza hasn't been real pizza for me for the last 40 years. Nothing today imo, compares with the way pizza was made when I was a kid. It was just crust, sauce, cheese*, the option of pepperoni, with ice cold pitchers of soda and/or beer.

*The cheese would stretch a mile when you bit it. God I miss that.

I used to make homemade pizza all the time (using a powder mix for the crust), but then I discovered Tombstone's Garlic Bread Crust Pepperoni Pizza for $3.50 and making my own pizza became pointless ;)

I make my own italian pizzas when I have the time. Waaaaaaaaaaay better with fresh tomatoes, mozarella some parmesan and basil, then that stuff they serve at pizzerias.

I get the freezer type pizza from Aldi which is tolerable . . .

when I get it from a pizzeria I like it with everything but anchovies or EBA :D
the crust should be crunchy and chewy, the sauce thick and hearty, the toppings hot and fresh, the cheese all melty
mmm

Little Caesar's pizza is the worst . . . it's absolutely inedible when it's cold :(

Yeah, I have been making my own pizzas for quite a while, and they are very good :). It is so simple, and there is so much food! Yumm. It has made me a bit of a pizza snob now though..

I have even gone so far to feed 12 people at once with my pizzas lol.. it is doable.
But i love restaurant pizza too.. when they are well made.
Deep frozen ones I hate with a passion.

I rarely have pizza. We have a Pizza Hut a few minutes walk away but my son doesn't like Pizza Hit pizza. If we got Dominoes (which my son likes) we would have to have it delivered which costs too much.

I do not like freezer type pizza from the supermarket.

Sometimes I make a "pizza" at home using a large pita bread as a base. I cook it under the grill.

Last night I made the dough. Used a garlic seasoned tomato paste for the sauce (we like a thick sauce) that was 'watered' down with oil from the sun dried tomatoes in oil. Toppings were spicy Italian sausage that I fried some garlic into, pepperoni, hot capicollo ham, green pepper, mushroom, red onion and sun dried tomatoes. All topped with the Kraft stretchy mozzarella and some old cheddar.

Oh, and before the toppings were added, I had put on ground mustard powder, red chili and garlic powder, oregano, and basil onto the sauce.

Really turned out quite nicely.

I don't buy pizza because I don't eat cheese. But I do enjoy pizza, so I make them occasionally. It's the simplest bread one can bake. It can't really go wrong. I recommend everyone to try it. :)

After making the raw base, I spread it with tomato paste and sprinkle with garlic granules, dried oregano, and olive oil.

Then, for a topping, I go with tomato slices, red onion, maybe red/yellow peppers, maybe a few olives, or maybe a few baked beans. (I'm English. We do this.) :)

Home made bread goes a long way. You buy a bread mix with the yeast already in it, and a 1 kg packet will cost about £1. But that 1 packet makes enough base for around 8 meals.

I was waiting for someone to put an English spin on the toppings, but I never would have predicted baked beans as a topping.

I make a badass "Mediterranean" style pizza with fresh basil, feta cheese, Mozarella, shredded chicken, pesto and roasted garlic. It's pretty tasty!

I think it was Heinz (the famous bean manufactuers) who pioneered it. I think in the mid 1990s, they brought them out. They don't sell them anymore though.

I will admit, too many beans and it just becomes soggy "beans on toast" with a few vegetable lumps sliding around on it. But when used sparingly it's a really nice addition to the pizza flavour. :)

edit: Also forgot, I also sprinkle a little chilli powder over the final thing before baking it. But not too much. :)

They use haggis as a pizza topping in some parts of the UK (Scotland ;)). Personally such misuse of such a noble beastie as a haggis on something like a pizza is nothing short of sacrilege, but that's just me. ;)

Still, I've seen worse things on pizzas... there was an image I had somewhere, but I've misplaced it now....
