Okay, so I see ads like this all the time and they're always about getting women to sell their eggs. And I'm curious what people think. Let's say it was a pretty safe, medically non-invasive procedure. All hypothetical. Would you sell your eggs? How much money would it take for you to do it?

Men can participate too, how much would it take for you to be a sperm donor?

Would you have any issues knowing that there might be something out there with your genetic material, or would you really just not care at all?

Sometimes I wish I had eggs to donate. They're so much more valuable than sperm. I really couldn't care less if my genetic material is out there if it's helping people. As long as it's not being used to create an evil army of RoJoHen clones, I'm good.

Can you make money by handing over your sperm? Is there such a thing? I knew you could sell your eggs but can you do the sperm, too? Or is this hypothetical?

I've seen things like $50 for sperm, but I don't know if any of it is legit or what the actual range is on payment.

I had a friend who did it, given that she was never going to have kids anyway. Think she made $4000 off of it.

I'm assuming--and please correct me if I'm wrong--that there is some type of application form you need to fill out containing details of your and your family's medical histories. The thing is, you can lie through your teeth on the application form if you were so inclined. I don't plan to sell my eggs (though I have no issues with women who do) but I don't think any clinic would take mine anyway because I have a child with a neurological disorder which probably has a genetic cause. There's also a predisposition towards alcoholism on my mother's side of the family, which may or may not have a genetic link. Any pregnancy is loaded with risks, of course, but with donated eggs, despite any precautions taken, you still don't really know what you're getting.

I would consider it if it were indeed safe and non-invasive, but the side-effects of the hormones one must take to sell eggs can be pretty awful. A woman has to put herself through quite an ordeal to sell her eggs.

However, I've definitely been broke enough to wish that my eggs were acceptable!

If I had any to give, yeah, I'd be interested in selling them. Sure, why not? Not really invasive, no committment on your part later, big chunk of money, so sure.

Hell, even $50 for sperm sounds good. I've got good genes, and I've just been throwing the stuff away!

I have a stupid question...

They are talking about taking all the eggs?

No. They don't take all the eggs. It's just like an IVF cycle, but instead of the embryos being implanted in you after fertilization, they're implanted in the woman you donated the egg to.

I've considered doing it because I'm probably not going to have a chance to get pregnant before I'm too old and I would like to leave something of myself behind. (I also want to have kids, but I'll probably adopt.) I think my family would be opposed to the idea, but if I do it, I won't tell them. (I'm a grown woman and it's none of their business anyway.)

Whatever I decide, I'll have to do it soon, because most of the places want you to be under 30.

The catch, I do believe, is that require you to be sexually inactive while you're donating to make sure they get as many sperm as possible.

Then again, that may have just been a FRIENDS episode.

In Australia it is illegal to sell blood, sperm or eggs or any other human tissue. They can only be donated.

Most eggs come from women who have an extra supply of eggs following them having IVF. Other eggs come from relatives (sisters, cousins etc) of the woman needing the eggs, or from a friend of the woman. Sometimes a woman will just donate because she wants someone, even a perfect stranger, to have the same joy as she did having children.
