Okay...

I'm going to spoiler mark this, despite the warning in the title, just to make sure nobody gets something they didn't want to know yet.

Spoiler: the movie

I've heard that in the new film, Vulcan does indeed get destroyed by Nero. This is apparently NOT something that older Spock is able to prevent.

This being the case, what do YOU see as the results in the timeline?

We know Federation tech somehow gets altered by what happens to the Kelvin at Nero's hands, leading to the changes in the Enterprise and Kirk's life, but with Vulcan being destroyed, this changes things more profoundly.

I don't know if both Amanda and Sarek survive, but if they do, what does this do to Sarek's place as Ambassador? Does the Enterprise end up carrying him and others to Babel?

Providing Space Seed and WoK take place in the new timeline, does Sarek approach Kirk about Spock's katra? If so, WHERE do they take the body and McCoy for the re-fusion?

With what happens to their homeworld, do Spock and others rescue the halfling Romulan children, or do they have other things on their minds at that point in tme when it's supposed to happen? Does Saavik end up dying of starvation somewhere as a child, never rescued?

This is even more significant than the death of Kirk's dad and how it affects his life (and the rest of the Federation and its tech).

I think that Sarek might become a much more important political figure and leader in nuTrek than in oldTrek.

One thing is for certain with the SPOILER EVENT in the movie, nuTrek does not have to unfold or have events similar to oldTrek. The gloves are off. Anything goes.

What kills me about this is the fact that Star Trek Online is still talking about Picard becoming Ambassador to Vulcan after he retires from Starfleet, and yet...

Spoiler: THE EVENT

...as we know, that's not very likely, the planet being DESTROYED and all.

If they're changing the timeline, the least they could do is be consistent and adjust the TNG era stuff to reflect the changes in Kirk's era.

It's actually quite easy this time.

Spoiler: Khan in the new timeline

He's still out there. Him and his ship were mentioned by Malek in ENT, and ENT is still canon in this new timeline.

I would imagine that the Khan story would play out somewhat differently in the new storyline, as much of the fleet would probably wind up working overtime to assist in the aftermath of the MAJOR EVENT posited to occur in the new movie. The events surrounding Khan might well take place many years later, or with a different ship... or Khan may just fly into a sun and put the universe out of his misery.

Maybe a little different. Maybe Carol Marcus and crew are looking for a planet to terraform to recreate Vulcan so Vulcan refugees can have a home. Then TWOK can continue as it was.

I'm just curious about any new TV or movies in this new world. Is Spock Prime gonna give them a heads up on V'Ger, on getting a couple whales, on the Borg, or is everything destined to unfold as before? I think they're going to look for new stories to tell. Some of the original universe stuff will play a role, but much of it will be elided.

For example, Khan need not be the menace he was in TOS and TWOK... or the threat can be different and not revenge driven.

Personally, I just hope they tell new stories. I don't want a Khan rehash. I really don't want a rehash of anything.

Make it new, damn it!

I don't want to see any re-making of the previous films. I want them to use what's happened in the new film, perhaps the Romulans or Klingons taking advantage of the Vulcan situation or an angry Vulcan trying to take revenge on Romulas.

I don't think elder Spock will want to be warning them about anything that happened in his future, how does he know that it wasn't the Vulcans that influenced the events that ran up to the Enterprise-D encountering Q and therefore the Borg. Not to mention him and Nero have made massive alterations to the timeline, don't expect Spock would want to make any more!

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I was just thinking the same thing as I left the theater and...

Spoiler: Timeline

This doesn't have to change the TNG events very much, if at all. Sure, Vulcan is destroyed. However, as was stated in the movie, the 10,000 or so Vulcans remaining are about to colonize a new planet, which will likely be named New Vulcan. By the time we get to TNG, the "New" may have been dropped and the new homeworld is just called Vulcan.

The main question I have left is this: Will Spock Prime use all of his knowledge to give the Federation a HUGE leap forward in technology? If he does, then yes, TNG is screwed up a bit, but the Federation will likely defeat the Klingons and Romulans easily in the near future. If he doesn't, which seems the more likely given that logic dictates that he not interfere any more in the timeline, then we have very few timeline problems, even with a blown up Vulcan.
