Major Story Overhaul in Star Trek XI?

I was just rereading this old article at Chud.com about how Terminator: Salvation's story was chopped up and reformed to largely fit the requests of Christian Bale (making John Connor a bigger character and basically screwing up the whole movie).

In the article Devin, who is no longer at Chud, notes that "similar vestigial script elements can be seen in this summer’s blockbuster hit Star Trek".

Other than cutting elements of the Klingon storyline (i.e., background for Nero) does anyone know what kind of major script changes Devin might be referring to here? From the final movie, I never got the impression that there was some alternate version of the movie that got chopped up along the way.

Deleted scenes aside, there's very little difference. The biggest is the mindmeld flashforward - Spock opens up a second black hole after Romulus is destroyed and goes back in time intentionally. According to the commentary track on the DVD, JJ was changing the scene up until 2 weeks prior to the film's release.

There was a writers' strike while STXI was being filmed. On-set changes of the kind that happened while filming Terminator Sally were prohibited, to he extent that some of Nimoys lines were rewritten and rerecorded after the strike was over, and his mouth reanimated with CG to say the new lines.

I didn't know this. That sounds somewhat experimental. I didn't even notice.

that early script makes sense of the line "coming back, you cheated", which made no sense really since Spock did it unintentionally

Deleted scenes also depict the connection between Uhura’s roommate and the Kobayashi Maru hack. Sebastian Valmont would be proud.
