Magic Radio

Am I the only one who thinks this is cool?

I've got an old AM portable radio, circa 1971 vintage. At parties, I'll bring it out. If you tune it to 670, it plays nothing but 70s hits, rock and disco. I tell my friends it's a magic radio, stuck in the past.

And then I'll show everyone the power cord--unplugged.

Now, of course it's not really magic. I've got an AM transmitter in my house with a range of about 500 feet hooked into a computer with a playlist. There are batteries in the radio so it doesn't need a plug.

But it's the effect which is fun. Very "Jefty is Five", if you catch my drift.

I do the same thing with my '38 upright Philco and WW2 music. People seem to like it. What do you think?

Awesome bro. You should give it more juice, rip the radio identifier out of it and broadcast your own radio station.

Hehe. Quarter watt is the legal max, but I have considered investing in a ginormous antenna. You can push the range out to a mile, maybe. *dons pirate patch*

I'm never getting rid of my Realistic STA-960

they used to make them so nicely, but these days they're just ugly hunks of cheap plastic . . . I don't care if it doesn't do 5.1 audio :D

In England we have a real AM station called magic radio, that plays 70s stuff.

I listened to that for quite a while through DAB and Sky but then started to get tired of the, seemingly, identical playlist being played over and over every day. It came to the point where I would know which song came next and 9 times out of 10 I was right.

yes I had a brief love affair with that radio station, when I got it on freeview, but now im bored, all commercial radio bores me.

Oh, that is a beautiful piece of work right there.
My Aunt and Uncle still have theirs, too. Looks just like that one. I've always wanted theirs and they have told me repeatedly no price will do. It is not for sale.

The death of all the old radios/music systems I've had has been crackly dials (eg volume) that jump about from too quiet to too loud to too quiet again, and sometimes even without touching them. Does anyone know if it is possible to make them uncrackly?

I have the same problem with the car audio knob. It's not a normal tuning one, it seems to be digital, 'cause I can hear changes while the volume goes up or down sometimes. Anyway, when I adjust down too fast, it'll shoot up killing my ears; not everyone needs to know I'm listening to score from "Knight Rider".

My dad has his, too. Still uses it all the time. He has it hooked up to his super old (and equally huge) CD player that he bought in the 80s.

My dad still uses his because he's one of those people who's afraid of new technology, lol. He still has the big, ugly tube TV.

Ah, gotcha. My dad is not afraid of new technology. He's more in the "If it ain't broke" category. The stereo and CD player work great, and they're hooked up to the speakers that he bought when he was 15. It's a pretty solid sound system.
