Mad Max: Fury Road Going Into Production

Australian film director George Miller says pre-production work will start next week on the latest Mad Max film, which will be produced in New South Wales.
Thirty years after the release of the original Mad Max, Miller is preparing to head out west to shoot Fury Road, the fourth instalment of the popular franchise.
Filming on Fury Road will begin in New South Wales in August 2010.

Elsewhere I read a casting rumour that the lead was going to the Aussie guy from Terminator Salvation.

So there you have it. Looking forward to it, or a step too far?

Recent rumors actually peg Shinzon himself Tom Hardy as slated to takeover the main lead role. Note that this isn't a prequel or remake but a sequel with Mel Gibson apparently too old to reprise his role. Personally I'd love to see another Mad Max film under the direction of George Miller. Too bad Gibson won't be in it but nevertheless this should be fun.

I think Sam Worthington's name only came up because he is linked with everything and anything these days, especially anything made in Australia. Hardy is probably in the running on the basis of his acclaimed performance in Brosnan.

Personally, though, I think Mel Gibson is Mad Max - I really am dubious of anyone else taking over. Plus when did Miller make a last decent action movie? Probably Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome? My hopes for this aren't high.

There was a rumor earlier this summer where the main actor from the Hurt Locker would be up for the lead. He sure has a Max Rockatansky vibe.

Road Fury would need more quotes from AC/DC ;)

Mel Gibson is too "old"? WTF? He's not even 55 yet. What's the matter here--they can't think up any kind of interesting adventure that concerns Max in his middle-age years? That's pathetic.

This movie has been in development hell for so long that I doubt it will ever get made. What makes this rumor any different from all the other ones over the years?

Word! Hopefully it won't conflict with his Legend of the Seeker's schedule.
Well, if Spence is still filming LotS, at least he won't be too far away in New Zealand.

I've got no problem with recasting the role. Sam Worthington may be too obvious, but I think he'd be an awesome Mad Max.

How about Gerald Butler? Or is that a too obvious choice?
I hope Vernon Wells gets a part, but this time as a good guy.

To be fair, it was actually Mel who told Miller that he was too old and out of shape to reprise the role. I'd imagine that Miller would have found it a lot easier to get finance for the movie with Gibbo in the role, even a post 'sugar tits & the Jews' Gibbo, than a little-known actor.

I like this "too obvious" thing. I don't know Sam Worthington but Gerard Butler really fits if you ask me. Though if I had my druthers I'd like to see Mel back warts and all.

The current franchise revitalization strategy seems to be in recasting though.

Gibson refusing to reprise the role because HE feels he's too old and out of shape (and probably just doesn't want to work that hard) is very different than the "Max" character being dropped because the film-makers felt the actor was too old.

Frankly, if Gibson turned down this opportunity, it was a mistake on his part. His "eccentricities" have kind of put his career into a tail-spin the last couple years. He could do with a "return-to-form" kind of move that might earn him some good will.

Sadly, I recall when the first "Lethal Weapon" movie came out and everyone was so shocked at how good Gibson was at playing a nut-job. What we hadn't yet discovered was that in reality Gibson WAS a nut-job doing a moderately good job of playing a sane person in his daily life.
