MacGyver movie in the works

If this is true I hope it's not a reboot. I'd love to see Richard Dean Anderson as MacGyver again.

^ I'd be surprised if they kept RDA on in any capacity other than perhaps a cameo. He's not a big enough box office star to headline a major movie, which this looks set to be. Perhaps he'll get a cameo as McGuyver's father or boss, but I don't see him as the lead.

I hope they don't decide to make this a gritty and dark movie and that they keep what worked in the original show. I wasn't a big fan but McGuyver's reliance on his wits and ability to conjure up, lets say, a helicopter from a can of coke and a deskside lamp, were highly appealing, as was the fact that he never seemed to use guns. With Bond and Bourne going dark and 'realistic', there has to be scope for a fun, decent old fashioned and escapist hero like McGuyver.

I just hope they play it straight and don't try to make it a parody or a Will Ferrell vehicle or something. Keep it authentic -- an adventure story about a brilliant, resourceful do-gooder hero who solves problems with his wits and abhors guns and violence.

^Amen. The only thing worse than a gritty revamped McGuyver would be a send-up, featuring a gormless, incompetent, accident-prone hero, whose improvised gadgets inevitably blow up on him.

Early days to be talking about casting, but I wonder who of the current crop of box office stars could capture that sort of amiable square-jawed derring-do with a straight face and no winks or nods to the camera. Brendan Fraser? Hugh Jackman?

It's actually easier to imagine several tv actors in the role (as is often the way) - Wentworth Miller (Prison Break), Nathan Fillion, Joshua Jackson, Matthew Fox. Maybe even Kiefer Sutherland - Jack Bauer is basically a sadistic version of McGuyver. All the resourcefulness but none of the abhorrence of guns or violence!

He'd better be sporting a mullet or the movie will be an epic FAIL!

Yeah, doesn't quite work on him like it used too. ;)

Well, at least pray they don't cast Will Forte as MacGyver's son.

I think Nathan Fillion or Aaron Eckhart would work-you've got to have that slight smirk to keep it light.

MacGruber!
He's workin' with his dad now and they've never been closer!
MacGruber!
They've even been talkin' about sharing an apartment!
MacGruber!
MacGyver is the perfect dad!
MacGruber!

Wasn't the WB tossing around the idea of a young MacGyver show a few years back? I remember something along the lines of Mac's young hip nephew basically doing the same sort of job his old uncle did, only with a cool pop song at the end of every episode ala Smallville.

Hmm, probably best it never happened.

RDA has become this really big fat guy (no joke -- Google current photos), so I don't think he has "star" appeal, and considering the upcoming "Robocop" reboot, "Conan" reboot, "Star Trek" reboot, the Hulk reboot, the "Pink Panther" re-visioning, and so forth, anyone who thinks films like this will be faithful, and/or continuiations, is dreaming. Not in today's Hollywood they won't.
