Lwaxanna Troi

Mrs. Troi was a very farcical character and "too much" for the time TNG takes place in as she was played mostly for yucks in her absurdity.

But she had her moments. For me, Mrs. Troi's best moment and episode came in "Half a Life."

She is the TNG version of Samantha's mother from Bewitched.

The difference is that Endora didn't deserve to be killed twice, then have he worthless dead body kicked four times, and the remains eaten by Worf.
 but they are very simmilar. Endora messed with Samantha's husbands name and Lwaxanna did the same with Worf. Both very flirty and both cause hell for their daughters.

She was very good in that one with the guy from MASH who was going to kill himself at 60.

I liked her in Dark Page; it was so good to see her given something to do other than chase after Picard/nearest man.

I actually liked the way Lwaxana was written, even though I would've dreaded her coming if I knew her in real life--because the thing is, I know someone who really IS like that, and with telepathy it would be scary to contemplate what she'd be like!!!

Lwaxanna Troi was great when she had a serious episode. I really thought she was great in Dark Page and DS9's "Forsaken." Half a Life was good too but not as good as those other two.

some characters are not meant to be lovable, she is just so great at the overbearing mother thing that you have to hate her.

I love Lwaxana almost universally. Majel played her with such a lovely Auntie Mame quality. I even liked "Cost of Living" for the most part. The holodeck part was too bizarre for words, but Lwaxana was so endearing to me.

"Half a Life" and "Dark Page" were her shining TNG moments. I could have done without her attempts at deep sorrow in the latter - I had a hard time buying her there. But overall, I loved to see Lwaxana show up.

Favorite Lwaxana moment comes from "Dark Page." After tormenting Picard with conversation for a few moments, she encourages him to go talk to one of the alien delegation, a suggestion he's all-too willing to follow. If you watch close as he walks away from her, Lwaxana reaches out and pats/pinches his tush. Picard pauses, takes an exasperated breath, and moves on. :techman:

I've always enjoyed the episodes with her in them. She was a great character.

If the did a Collector's Edition box set with all her episodes in, I'd definitely buy one!

Substantial episode for both Lwaxanna and the show, in general. Deanna discovers details about her life at the same time the audience does, which is interesting. Very moving and suspenseful story.

I, like most here, greatly liked her serious episodes, ie. Half a Life and Dark Page. I think they were very powerful episodes.
I greatly disliked, ie. HATED her other, light-hearted episoded. Manhunter made Spock's Brain look like Shakespeare.
However, I have to reluctantly admit that it required an established history of those farcical episodes to give her serious moments the resonance they had.
Still, I never miss not seeing her.

My major source of entertainment from Lwaxana is the reactions her character gets from the others. I particularly enjoyed Picard's hiding from her in the opening to 'Half A Life' and Beverly's reference to how her arrival makes him shudder in 'Remember Me.'

"Personal Log, Counselor Deanna Troi Stardate 44778.6 (or whatever it was): .... My mother is on board."

I was always delighted when she turned up in an episode. I still like her episodes today, but then again Troi was one of my favorite characters, so maybe it's a family thing.

I've always been a fan of the Auntie Mame types myself. I find them larger-than-life in an appealling way.

That being, said, I loved Picard's line in "Cost of Living" - "Nothing would give me more pleasure than to give away Mrs. Troi."

I think that the main problem with Mrs. Troi is she was just too over-used. And until they started changing the tone of her stories to more serious, it just seemed like hearing the same joke over and over again.
