Lucas doing Red Tails

Mistral

Vice Admiral
Admiral
...a movie about the Tuskeegee airmen. The big debate:focus on the racial battle at home or the combat over Germany. The film will be based on oral histories Lucas recorded at his Skywalker ranch with surviving members of the unit. The big question is-Can he avoid sucking the life out of a naturally interesting story or will he pull a "Phantom Menace"?

I think he's got a chance of doing good since it doesn't involve the fanboy Star Wars expectations. The pressure levels should be lower, allowing him to concentrate on what he wants to do with the story. IMO.

Will he be writing and/or directing too? Because that might pose some problems in and of themselves. Plus it might be difficult for him to resist Michael Bay-ing it.

Isn't this the same project he planned to do back in the late '80s or so? I seem to remember reading something about that in the Lucasfilm fan club magazine eons ago.

Is this his attempt at the big, socially-relevant, historical movie that "Schindler's List" has kind of been mocking him about for a decade?

I liked it better when it was called The Tuskeegee Airmen.

Not that you can't have two movies about the same subject but it does kind of take the wind out of it a little. Lucas' pet project that he last I heard isn't even directing or writing, hard for me to get to worked up about it. Though I suppose there will be some spectacular ILM CGI.

There's talk that Lucas may direct the film, but all that's been confirmed thus far is that the script was written by John Ridley, Lucas will at least serve as a producer, and Lucas hopes shooting will begin later this year or early in 2009.

If Lucas directs I'm there. Personally, I enjoy his writing, too, though. His dialogue sometimes suffers but his plotting is excellent.

I will be very interested to see this film if he directs it. It would be nice to see him once again directing a non Star Wars film.

After all, he did give us American Graffiti and THX-1138. :techman:
