He was only in 2 episodes before fading into obscurity, but I thought Lt. Kevin Riley was a good addition to the Enterprise crew.

He did a lot with what he was given to work with. Surprisingly though, he was never asked about being a regular character.
He definitely struck a chord with the fans, though. His autograph line was a mile long when I saw him at a con.

That is cool. He moved on to bigger things after Trek. He is a university professor in Minnesota.

Yep, to this day(OT : but its a wonderful thing that in the USA people value their elders and employ them for so long. Here, you're either CEO by 40 or on the scrapheap).
He said he'd often get his students coming up to him and asking for autographs! "Wow, you're Kevin Riley!".
His life is quite a story - he did some theatre after TOS, then just decided to live a hippy lifestlye, hitting the drugs hard. He drifted for years, then took himself back to college, rising all the way to Professor. Nice work, Bruce.
Given what an impact the riley character had in only two episodes can you imagine him in more and getting really popular! Then I wonder how shatner in tos era would take to having TWO supporting characters being so popular? Not well, I suspect.

I suspect Kirk had Lt. Riley permanently assigned to cleaning the Deck 12 toilets.
I certainly enjoyed his character and would liked to have seen more of him. He has appeared in Star Trek literature so he certainly wasn't forgotten.
