^I believe the conceit of the series is that in its alternate history, Texas has expanded to incorporate New Mexico and other states.

Though, it should be pointed out that New Mexico's history and eventual statehood was completely independent of events in Texas. Actually, it's more likely that, had events transpired the way they did in the book, New Mexico would be the larger state that incorporated most of Western Texas.

One nit: Roddenberry was a bomber pilot, not a fighter pilot, helped along by his over-six-foot-frame (fighter pilots tend to be on the short side, regardless of how Hollywood portrays 'em).

Well, I saw it at Galaxy last week and bought it even though I haven't had a chance to read the first one yet. (Too much ST on the "to read" pile.) But I do have the first instalment, too.

That's reminds me that I have never offered my opinion about Counterstrike after reading it and since it's unlikely I will write a full blown review on it (way behind on tie-in reviews and other project for USF) I just want to say that I really enjoyed it.

I actually do plan on reading them, Dragon Precint and the Calling eventually.

I have read a few original novels by "Star Trek" authors and so far none of them has disappointed:

Last World War & Counterstrike by Dayton Ward - very good
The Genesis Protocol by Dayton Ward - good
Dragon Precinct by Keith R.A. DeCandido - very good
The Sir Apropos of Nothing - Trilogy by Peterd David - very good

I have The Calling in my ever growing to read pile, too, but I'm not sure when I will come around to read it.
