Lt. Commander promotions

M'rk son of Mogh

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
In "Generations", we saw the event surrounding Worf's promotion. Him having to walk the plank, grab the hat, you all know what I'm talking about.

Riker makes the comment that nobody's ever done this before.

Is it possible that all promotions to Lt. Commander have this sort of party? Did Geordi fall off the plank attempting this 5 years prior?

Picard was being a jackass by having a party if it's not done for all senior officer promotions. It's possible, though, that the plank hologram program was just a (recently introduced) tradition of the Enterprise. I know Sisko got a ceremony/party when he became captain, but I can't recall any others (except maybe Rom, who got a party off-screen--though, he wasn't an officer).

All promotions in Starfleet should be accompanied by a ritual humiliation and hazing.

When Geordi got promoted to Lt Commander, they took off his VISOR and made him stumble around comically while they laughed at him.

IIRC, Troi was originally fed to lions in ancient Rome. But then they went and cut that part from the aired ST:GEN. (Or did they?)

It seems logical to me that a promotion comes with it some-kind-of "right of passage"/"hazing" ritual. I doubt it was always the boat (Riker could've been speaking "in character") it was "required" or that it was even something Starfleet condoned. But it was all "in good fun" I imagine if Worf declined to be part of it he would've been denied promotion. Infact, for all we know, he may of even asked for this paticular theme.

That's just in poor taste.

^Picards giving me the finger and peeing blood on Geordi. It must be one of the those cut scenes from season 5, you can tell by the jacket, but from which episode?

It's the almost finished ketchup bottle which makes Geordi's humiliation complete.

If they do routinely celebrate promotions with ritual humiliation, what do you think they did to Troi post-Thine Own Self? I'd like to think it involved a crash helmet, body armour, and a bucket of slime ala old school kids' game shows.

I wasn't kidding in the first post: Riker says in the original script of ST:GEN that Troi was fed to the lions in ancient Rome.

Of course, that was back when Worf was simply to be fed to the sharks. The plank was there merely to dunk him, not for the (IMHO much more entertaining) contest of grabbing the hat. And I really don't remember if they cut Riker's line from the final deal.

I wonder if all promotions, and not just those to the higher ranks, involve a hazing scene like this. Not necessarily with the Captain present, but still. It would be damn waste not to be able to use the scenario you just created on Wesley...
