I have seen this episode several times, but just watched it again and don't remember it affecting me this much. Finding out Jaxa died was like someone kicking me in the gut. I guess that was the intention.

I had an idea to write a story in which Sito Jaxa did not die, but rather her death was faked so she could go undercover (perhaps with Section 31). Their bartender friend, Ben, was actually a recruiting agent. In my un-written story, it's years later, Sam Lavelle is going on an away mission, and Ben takes him aside and warns him he may run into an old friend and that Sam must act like he doesn't know the person.

As to the episode and the whole plot-line about them all competing for promotion, here's how I view it: each major command has a limited number of slots given to the commander to select Ensigns for early (six-nine months) promotion to Lieutenant-junior grade. The Enterprise is a large enough ship that Picard was given one such slot, with Jaxa, Lavelle, and Taurik all nominated by their supervisors. Nurse Ogawa is also nominated, but Doctor Crusher submits her to Medical Command which has many more slots. Make sense??

I love the character of Sito Jaxa and it is such a shame they never brought her back (the episode "Hard Time" from DS9 was to have been Sito instead of O'Brien dealing with life after a long imprisonment). @Sgt_G, I too had an idea for a "Sito returns" story where she was assigned by Starfleet Intelligence to become a handler for the likes of Joret Dal and other UFP-sympathisers in the Cardassian Military. I've been meaning to dig it out again and see if it'd work.

This is Laura Linney as an older Sito, made by JM1776 over at STPMA.net for his fanfic verse.

Great responses! I'd love to read the fan fiction mentioned here. Both sound awesome. Thanks for the info on the USS Liberty. Their website seems to have lapsed unfortunately.

I believe this was the first episode where Picard set out to systematically kill all of the other cadets in Wesley's group. He made it look like it was in the line of duty, of course. Next season, Mr. Locarno would have been scrambled in a transporter accident after Picard offers him a chance on the Enterprise. Next, Jean Hajar would have been fed to The Borg. That's how Wesley graduated with all "4.0s"

Sorry for reviving an old thread but I didn't want to make a new one. I thought it was really crappy how they used a young discraced Star Fleet noob who was very eagerly to prove herself by sending her out on that dangerous mission. I think that was a very low point for Picard. Why couldn't they use some trained spy? Apparently Star Fleet doesn't really have any spy-type operatives because they use regular cast members for these types of missions.

Great episode and probably one of the ones I've watched the most. I like it because sometimes you just need a break from the regular cast. Know what I mean?
Yes, I know what you mean. This episode was a nice change of pace, showcasing characters other than the usual ones.

Even though I liked the episode, I didn't find any of the lower deckers likable, especially not the one who was the Will Riker wannabe. One Will Riker on any ship is enough.

About Sito, what does it take for someone to get kicked out of Starfleet Academy? Apparently, not even for the responsibility for the death of a fellow cadet and the subsequent cover up. (I know that Locarno supposedly got booted. But we all know he came back as Paris.;))

Picard told Sito that he brought her on board the Enterprise so that she would have a chance to redeem herself. That was too generous of Picard. Wouldn't it had been more appropriate for Sito to have to really work her way back into Starfleet's good graces by starting out on a garbage scow instead of getting a plum assignment on the flagship of the fleet?

Here's the thing though. It DOESN"T give you a break from the main cast at all. They are ALL OVER this episode, but you see them all in a very different light. That's why this episode is so outstanding. Every single main cast member got something very substantial to offer in this episode. It may be their best ensemble episode of all

You really get to see the nuts & bolts of Starfleet in action, & you get a much more personal look at our heroes, through the eyes of those who answer to them. This episode NEEDED to happen. I honestly think more like it did

Weird, that's a reason (or at least one of them) I don't like this episode that much.
But, to each their own, nice that there is an episode like that too.
Hmmm... But our main cast do get featured in this episode. Actually they're featured in a way we don't often see, from outside of their inner circle, but we do go back inside some too, with poker games and such.

You may be the 1st person I've seen say they don't care for this one. I Wouldn't say it surprises me (everybody's tastes differ) but it is definitely intriguing

I think Worf's stuff in this one is particularly awesome. We rarely get to ever see him mentor in a purely Starfleet way. Geordi gets a bit of that here too

I'm not saying I hate this one, it's OK, just not among the best.

And now, more I think about it, I'm starting to like this episode more. :)
Who knows, might be awesome next time I see it. :)

It's definitely worth a rewatch imho, but it's for very specific tastes. It's not an action or suspense episode. It's a social one, sort of like Family, or In Theory. Some people don't care much for those episodes. Some people adore them

There's a place for both in the TV world, sometimes it's nice to see some action but episodes that make you think definitely have their place. How about an action episode that really makes you think about the world? :)

And now, this episode goes into "to see" list.
