Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

I Just finished the first episode on prime, I don’t think this series is for me. Everyone seemed to be so hyper and manic. I don’t think I laughed aside from a mild chuckle in the opening credits.

I’ll probably watch the rest of the series out of my sheer ocd completionist mindset

*insert sensible chuckle meme here*

That is how I felt after the first episode and I did watch the rest of the episodes. The hectic pace and fast talking is reduced a bit in the later episodes but not enough. For me this series is not at the level of the live action Trek shows or even TAS, but it is an entertaining diversion while waiting for Discovery or Picard. The main character is annoying but Boimler is great.

Episode 1 IMO is the worst episode of the Season. It gets better as it goes on.

Just finished the first episode, and share the sentiments - far too manic and not particularly amusing.

Will give it a few more episodes to win me over.

I thought that, but I still haven't watched the last four.

EAS has put up his reviews.

https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/episodes/low1.htm

Some of them surprise me, like I thought he would outright hate the Badgey episode, but he gave that a 6, meanwhile Vertias he gave a 2 which is the lowest score he gave for the season, mostly because he felt it was a straight up parody. He also did like most of the call backs to previous series

In the first six installments of Lower Decks, and to lesser extent still in "Much Ado About Boimler", much of what happened actually made sense. It felt like Star Trek with a humorous twist. This seriousness is absent from "Veritas", which is totally a parody of Star Trek, and in particular of the series premise that could be phrased as "Lower Decks have no idea what's going on".

The man confuses me.

Binged it all in one go, the first episode I think was just weird getting used to seeing the TNG era in animation, after I got used to it, absolutely loved it, honestly think its the best done and most well written set of Star Trek episodes in some time.

EAS' reviews of it are bizarre, and his reducing Mariner to a Mary Sue is ridiculous, that seems more like his problem than the writers.

It might be one of those cartoon art style things that doesn’t have an explanation.

Indeed.
This is Brad Boimler as he appeared in Star Trek Online:

Stopped reading at his review of the second episode, when he was lecturing that Starfleet officers should be complimenting each other...

Also I came across explicit Shaxs/T'ana art via Tumblr and now I'm scarred for life.

As teen I used that website to help me learn English.
But I also had to stop went Bernd threw words around like "wokefest" and "Mary Sue", accusing the theme as "girls cool, boys lame". Topped of with unironically critiquing the all-American Human crewmembers while criticising Disco Trek for being woke! Man, that's how it feels like not being represented! But of course that's only a non-"woke" concern when it's your group that's affected.
/rant over

Anyway, I read all about LD during its original release, so there aren't any spoilers left for me. Still, I enjoy watching the show myself. People compare it to Rick & Morty, but the art style and "slapstick humor in an otherwise dramatic universe"-style is more reminiscent of Final Space.

I noticed that. Yeah, while an interesting interpretation, those characters didn’t ever seem to “look quite right” (at least to me) when they were drawn more realistically in STO. I was glad when they switched them over.

I'm grateful we got to see this more realistic style. Allows me to picture them easier in "real life mode" when I ponder crossovers. I wonder what they'll look like when get to actually meet them in STO.

I really hope they get all the voice actors to reprise their roles. They did for damn near everyone else that’s appeared since the beginning, so why not?

#BringBackShaxs!

Further, I hope, if they do missions with Lower Decks people, that they convey a humor in a similar vein to the show. STO suffers from a similar affliction to much of live-action Trek, taking itself too seriously at times. They may find a curious resurgence in player activity if they lightened up a tad-bit. I also not-so-secretly wish we could see LDS cameos in PIC, using the same actors, a little bit older, wiser, and maybe even senior command roles. A quick shot of the Miles O’Brien statue in Disco would be good too. :)
