Never in a million years would I have ever expected any show runner within the Trek franchise make the Pakleds a believable adversary, let alone a substantial recurring threat.

I have been trying to get my father to watch this show for months, but we normally do a family viewing night at his house for new Trek, and he won't watch a "cartoon" even though I told him it's better than Discovery. Well the parents came to my house for Xmas and I forced him to watch it on my tv. He started laughing at it. Victory is mine!
so I'm super late to LD, didn't want to bump an epsiode specific thread. Just watched episode 2 so I might not be back to read this thread for a a few days until I can finish he season to avoid spoilers
I don't dislike it so far, I just think it's a little too mocking of trek. Poking fun at yourself is fine to a point
I don't know, it's like they're trying too hard to be Orville (a show I like) but taking it a little too far. I'm not saying this needs to be super serious Trek, just tone down the self mocking a bit.

Not nearly as mocking of Trek as Discovery is though
How so? Because Orville started out kind of fun and then went uber serious, while LD kept that lighter feel. It wasn't always to my taste but it appealed more than Orville.
It just was a bit of fun, like Star Wrecks or Jason Alexander's special appearance with the anniversary special. I think it's OK to have fun with the concept of Star Trek. No mocking of it in poor taste. It's just a different way to take on the Trek idea, like Discovery or Picard are different from past iterations.
I see Orville more as a sitcom set in a sci-fi where as in LD the joke is the sci-fi if that makes any sense.
I really like both but the humour is different and anyone who likes McFarlane could enjoy Orville where as LD would need an understanding of sci-fi shows and Trek to be funny

I don’t think Lower Decks mocks Trek. It lovingly pokes fun at some of it. Everyone involved loves Star Trek. It pokes fun but it comes from love.
Yet, they somehow made it work. Easily my favorite Trek of the 21st century and I'm a fan of the Abrams films and Enterprise.
I'm still wondering whether Boimler's hair is meant to be purple (or whether it's supposed to look black to the audience and is just purple because of some animation reason)

There's a character in the Titan novels that does exactly this.
Given that we have people today with purple, pink, green, and various other hair colors they weren't born with, Boimler's hair probably wouldn't even be given a second thought in the 24th-Century. Maybe as he gets older, he might change his hair color, but for now it's purple.
