Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

In some ways starfleet philosophy is its own religion. A mix of Vulcan stoicism tempering jet-age manifest destiny with a side helping of gunboat diplomacy. A belief that individuals united under common cause and ethics can and therefore have a moral imperitve to improve not only their own localities but to find new ones and improve them as well. The UFP is an organization that thrives by expansion, much like borg. It needs new converts. When it is static, the corruption kicks in.

That fits in a bit too well. Though, I would say that corruption appears to occur whether they are expanding or not. There is some aspect of leadership in the Federation that really impacts their ability to remain uncorrupted.

corruption is ultimately endemic to any large organization, I suppose, compounded over time. Corruption once it sets in well and establishes itself, is almost impossible to root out. But a democracy, for all its flaws, can in theory at least, purge itself of a good deal of it periodically.

I can't recall the name of the episode, but its the one where the Blue guy from "Old Wounds" shows up on the ship.
"Cupid's Dagger" is the name of the episode.

Ah. I only remembered them flirting. I'd forgotten they went all the way.

The fundamental conceit of the Federation is that all intelligent beings are not only equal in moral worth, but fundamentally identical and interchangeable as individuals. It leans very heavy into "nurture" - insofar as basically all differences between the different species are chalked up to culture rather than biology. Which is somewhat understandable, considering they're supposed to be allegorical references to human diversity, and no one wants to imply some human ethnic groups are biologically distinct from others in terms of cognition or personality. Thus anyone can thrive equally under the Federation's rules - provided they give up whatever cultural shibboleths they believe which conflict with the Federation's core values.

that's one reason why augments and androids are persecuted in the Federation. they are better. they don't fit in with the ideal.

TrekYards guys don't hate it (the trailer at least), so that's a positive.

But most of their comments are like 'it looks like TNG/canon!!'. They do like the humour though.

That was so funny when the shield on the shuttlecraft was being turned on and off. I bet lots of people were laughing when they saw that. The humor in the trailer was very clever. I like how the jokes weren't obvious or juvenile.

I'm sensing sarcasm...

Bummer we're not getting some kind of comic book lead-in to the show. I really enjoyed the comic and novel lead-ins to Picard.

I liked the trailer. The only part I didn’t care for was that characters seemed loud, especially at the beginning. Hopefully it was just these particular clips and most of the time they would speak with a normal tone of voice. Or I may have to lower the volume while watching this.

Yeah, I watched their livestream last night, it was pretty decent. I’m not the biggest fan of Cockings (though I certainly don’t hate him), but I quite like Foley. Foley’s own first reaction video posted to his own channel was pretty good. He told the haters who were criticising him for showing the temerity to actually like the trailer to get the fuck out.
