Loving "Torchwood"

I just finished watching Series Four of Doctor Who and Season Two of Torchwood, and I actually enjoyed Torchwood more. Amazing, considering how silly I found it in the first season.

And I enjoyed the "every companion and the kitchen sink" finale of DW, but was left wanting. I have a feeling it's because I wasn't sure what would happen on TW, while there are certain limits to DW. I think it's due a regeneration, or something.

I thought series 2 of Torchwood was a big improvement over the first, and I'm looking forward to series 3. I hope the 5 episode story gives them a new way of looking at it, and makes them go for long serialised stories more often.

I always found it ironic that the Brits main complaint about Torchwood seemed to be all the sex the show has in it. It's ironic because of how much they mock American audiences for being so prudish.

That said, I rather liked the show, too. The guy who plays Jack kind of freaks me out now after the horrible plastic surgery he's obviously had, but other than that, it's not a bad show at all. Right up there as a fun romp with Doctor Who.

I think the complaint was that the sex and swearing seemed forced, out-of-context, and generally a bit silly - not that it was there. Like it'd been added just to earn the show its "adult" status, rather than because it served the drama or the characters.

I reeaally didn't like season 1 much, but it had its moments. But, as danjamesjb said above, it was the "oh, let's have the required gay kiss to shock people!" or "We need to make some sexual references to prove we racy!" feel it had that put me off. Season 2 was, IMHO, a real improvement and I liked the characters a heck of a lot more. The stories, for the most part, had a much more organic feel, and that the sex was just a natural part of the characters' lives and not forced in there, simply for the sake of making it "adult."

I wasn't aware that JB had plastic surgery lately. I thought he looked fine as he was.

Exactly, the complaint is that it's trying to be "adult" in an adolescent way, not adult in mature way.

I liked the Jack/Jack moment n the series one finale, but that was probably the highlight. Series two seemed to get a lot better, though I thought keeping Owen around after he died dulled the impact of his death too much.

They seemed to find their feet with it though which makes me look forward to series 3. Even if there will be no Toshiko :(

I agree. Jack/Jack was one of the best parts of the entire series. Series 2 was a vast improvement over series 1, but it still stumbled in places.

john barrowman's never had surgery to the best of my knowledge. he looks much the same now as he did over 10 years ago on Electric Circus.

So he looks the same as he did 10 years ago and you take this as proof that he hasn't had plastic surgery? ;)

Wouldn't surprise me if Barrowman's had some work done, and it would make sense of the 'You've had some work done.' line in Utopia.

But yeah s2 of Torchwood was so much better it's untrue. Again my problem with S1 wasn't its adult tone, it was how childish it was, it was really trying way too hard to shock. Frankly I was more shocked when Rhys said Fuck in one episode of S2 than the entire of S1 put together, it worked so much better. Really looking forward to s3 now.

I seem to remember him saying on an interview somewhere that he wouldn't hesitate to have work done, so it seems like he'd happily admit it if he had any.

Dead Ringers' parody completely nailed Torchwood's first season. Season two was great, especially Ianto, he was fantastic.

Something happened to Barrowman's nose, then. It went from natural-looking when he first showed up on Doctor Who to something that was caught in a vice-grip too long in Torchwood.

Really? I thought he looks visibly older, though of course that could be down to better camera's, lighting (etc) and his putting on weight. He even looked as if he'd aged quite a bite more than a couple of years in Who between Parting of the Ways and The Sound of Drums.

Torchwood's sex seemed forced, juvenile and out of context to me. When I was watching it I got the same vaguely disturbed and embarrassed feeling I used to get reading some Buffy fanfic years ago - like it was written by 12 year olds who had never even seen the oppostie sex naked let alone done the deed. I think that's the criticism that was being levelled, not the inclusion of the sex itself.

I always felt that was the criticism too. I don't get where some people get the idea everyone was complaining about sex being included, rather than the execution of it.

I always disliked the sex inclusion - but only because I was visiting my mum when Torchwood's first two eps were shown. That was uncomfortable viewing.
