Love...exciting and new!!!

My wife and I have been watching the old LOVE BOAT show, via Netflix...and it got me to thinking about Trek....what love story/romantic pairing on any of the Star Treks did you NOT really 'feel'. Meaning, the implied relationship, or even one you saw on screen, just didn't seem to have any "love" in it...meaning, you didn't 'get' the connection..

For me? Its the blond woman on the Deadly Years. For whatever reason I just didn't like her, at all...and I can't believe Kirk would have been with her. To me there just wasn't any 'connection' between the two of them...

Well let's see:
Trip and Cole (she was interested, he wasn't).
Trip and Princess Fishstick.
Trip and Liana in Oasis.

Lwaxana and anybody.
Troi and any of her "guest" lovers.

I agree about the woman from the Deadly Years.
Spock with Droxine (she was interested but I don't buy that he was.)
Clearly not Lenore in Conscience of the King.

All good picks...And isn't it crazy to know that in the 23rd century, blond women will be just as whacko as they are now???

I never worked out how Tom Paris even SURVIVED his relationship with B'elanna.

Also: Trip and T'pol. But then, the entire series lost me in the end :(

worf and K'Ehleyr."i will not take the oath with You." "I will not be complete till you are at my side." Perfect

I think the worst "love story" by far was between Jadzia Dax and Meral in "Meredian". For those who don't recall (and there are probably a lot of you, since it was such an awful and forgettable episode), Dax meets this guy on a planet where the people fades out of existence every sixty years and the two "fall in love". I put that expression in quotations because a less convincing romantic courtship I have never seen.

We're supposed to believe that their attraction for each other is so strong that Dax would give up at least sixty years of her life and her career to fade away with him based on a couple of dates they have that are packed with horribly lame dialogue. I was shocked and appalled by the show trying to sell me on such a pitiful excuse for a romance. It's an insult to the viewer's intelligence to suggest that Jadzia would be seduced by such a bland person. We're supposed to believe a character as wise, dynamic, and adventurous as Jadzia is going to want to throw away everything to be with this dull twit? Give me a break!

Fortunately, the writing was immeasurably stronger when they did the same kind of situation in "Rejoined". Now THERE was an episode where the chemistry between two people was natural rather than forced, and you could really believe that they were truly deeply in love. It was clear how and why they would want to make tremendous sacrifices to be with each other. The intensity of their love could be felt in every scene and gave the episode incredible tension and resonance. It did everything right that "Meredian" did wrong.

Pretty much all of them.

What cynics you two are. :( "Captain's Holiday" and "Qpid" were both delightful romantic romps. The other Picard love stories ("Lessons" and "The Perfect Mate") were great too. Kirk's "relationships" tended to be a little more shallow, but the one in "The City on the Edge of Forever" was awesome.

Im gonna have to say Beverly and the Trill (Odan?) Never really got that one.

Picard and Vash happened too fast for me and Picard falling for her was just weird.

The City on the Edge of Forever also happened extremely quick for me. I know they only had an hour to tell a story but I hate it when they try and do a love story (or try to throw love in it). It never seems convincing.

Yeah. Picard/Vash worked because the writers went in to it totally conscious that they were total opposites, and you know how sometimes opposites attrack. Definitely worked for that couple.

Now, 'opposites attract' that DIDN'T work for me was Worf/Troi. I felt that was so awkward. Worf/Dax, on the other hand, that felt like a natural pairing...

Eh, they did about as well as could be expected in the time allotted, but the romance itself was nothing special, it was the surrounding circumstances that elevated that episode above most.

Trek's difficulties with romance are an extension of its difficulties with characters and dialogue in general. TOS and DS9 did better than the rest in that respect.

I just watched "The City on the Edge of Forever" again and I disagree that the dramatic impact of the love story was only due to the circumstances. It is understandable that Kirk falls for Edith because you see him spending a lot of time with her, going on walks with her and hearing all about her very endearing idealistic beliefs about the future.

I think the key to romance working onscreen and on television in most cases is that the characters have conversations where what they say to each other is compelling enough that you can understand why one character would be taken with the ideas, feelings, philosophies, etc. of the other. I believe they pulled that off in this episode by nicely illustrating what a kind and romantic person Edith was through the words she says when she's with Kirk. You can clearly see how/why he would adore her because of them.

I'd agree wholeheartedly with the Meridian pairing.

As for main-character-pairings, Chakotay/Seven was completely wtf for me, and I'm surprised it hasn't come up sooner. I also didn't like Worf/Troi at all (I'll agree, Worf/Jadzia felt so much more natural.) And I personally didn't like Ezri/Bashir.

Romantic mismatches from Trek, oh dear.

Dax and Meridian guy for sure.
The Doctor and Seven (Hinted at many times, was just too odd)
Chakotay and Seven (Even worse than Doc/Seven)

Nearly all of the women Kirk met during TOS, however Carol Marcus and Gillian Taylor should have been in more than their one movie.

Chakotay and Seven.
Janeway and the hologram.
Something creepy and twisted in both those situations. Seven creates an idealised version of Chakotay then sets about turning the real man into what she wants.
In the other, Janeway gets her man courtesy of custom order.

*shudder* Something seriously disturbing about both ideas.

:techman: I agree! I've always seen the Picard/Vash relationship, wonderfully written by Ira Steven Behr, as an homage to the great romantic film pairings of the 40's. The very compelling 'battle of wills' dynamic to the Picard/Vash relationship is reminiscent of Bogart and Bacall in the classic movie "To Have and Have Not." Vash is Bacall to Picard's Bogart. Vash's brazenness complements Picard's more sedate personality perfectly. She is the ideal foil for Picard's straight man. The characterizations and relationship dynamics between Picard and Vash makes this pairing a pure joy to watch.

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie
