"Louis Theroux: Law and Disorder in Philadelphia"

Did anybody catch this eye opening documentary, hosted by the sarcastically stoic Lous Theroux? I heard from some people in a related thread from elsewhere that Philadelphia is not so bad in many places and as a city has overall improved, but then again American cities tend to have horrid buffer zones between the much better commercial centre and outer suburbs that are no go areas and breeding grounds for gangs.

I'm surprised that ginger haired lard arse is on top of the heap amongst the gang members when he's getting so high on his own supply, though it is likely he'll eventually be done in by either his unseen suppliers, one of his lieutenants, or through his own ineptness (ie slipping on a step when high and cracking his skull). I have a feeling that bald cop in the white shirt is cutting a slice.

I love Louis Theroux so of course I watched it.
This was a good one, all it need was the COPS theme over the intro :D

Pretty bad place, glad I don't live there

The big fat ginger guy (Reds) was great though. I love his voice, sounds like some stoner surfer guy "no man, I ain't no drug dealer man. I'm just a regular dude yeah?"
Yeah mate, a normal guy with a $100,000 necklace who goes round fucking stamping on womens heads.

That crack whore was quite bad, 3-4 minutes in this vid

The look on her face after she says she doesn't want to go home to get high because she'll get beat up by her "sugar daddy" is really sad.

Yeah, I saw this. Have to say, apart from the aforementioned crack whore segment and the bit interviewing the grandmother of some kid that got killed (both of which were a real buzz-killers, if you'll pardon the insensitivity), I was chuckling pretty much all the way through. Good show. Wouldn't want to live there, for sure!

^ Why were you cuckling?

Am I the only one (I'm watching on Youtube) to whom the host seems both notably clueless and insensitive?

It's his style. Confrontational without being antagonising, probing without really colouring it, and keeping his distance while getting involved as much as possible. Personally I love his documentaries.

The answer to both your questions is "it's Louis Theroux".

That's his style. It always makes me chuckle; he's a really good & funny interviewer.

Me too, I think his acting dumb puts them off balance and they answer questions they wouldn't normally answer, and even if they're not being entirely truthful you get insight in to their character.

Theroux is Cohen without needlessly being a complete asshole with innocent people who've been genuinely misled (like that Romanian village), but they both share the same technique of allowing arrogant and unpleasant morons to hang themselves with their words. Louis Theroux should've been the one to interview those Scientologist kooks instead of the relatively easily intimidated Sweeney a while back.

I'd say Louis' earlier Weird Weekends shows were by far the best.
Some of my favourites would be Survivalists, Porn Stars, Swingers, Wrestling, Body Building and Gangsta Rap
And some of the later stuff he did like Louis and the Brothel, Louis and the Nazis, and The Most Hated Family in America are all just excellent

What makes the shows what they are is the people Louis meets and who he is able to get them to really open up.

Every ep is available on a famous video site btw

The episodes with the middle aged sex maniacs (the swingers) and those strange Neo-Nazis/Christian fundies living out the sticks were tremendous eye openers. :wtf:

They're currently repeating Weird Weekends on Dave. And BBC are repeating the recent gambling one.

I don't know if I would consider Theroux's style "clueless". I think rather he asks questions that let people answer very freely.

Thought this show was pretty good.

What faceless organized crime syndicate is behind Red? The Mafia isn't what it used to be - Russians, Albanians, Triads? Sorry to sound subversive, but would we make a dent in organized crime if we legalized illegal drugs? I mean legit tobacco is arguably more addictive than heroine and legit alchohol fucks up your cognative behaviour very effectively.

"We want to bern him. He wanted to bern someone, so in return we want to bern him!"

I was pissing myself was when that "cop" ran up to that guy on the ground and kicked him in the head. Rewound it about 5 times, hilarious

And how about that drug baron. "I put your baby in oven, and turn it on. I put knife to your wife's throat, and let bleed. Then you pay me! What else can you do?"
Haha, mental. Bunch of animals

Suddenly Philadelphia looks allright!

A psycho sticking babies into fucking microwaves and he is still out in what's little of South Africa's society!? Angry mobs and paramilitary goons seem to be just band aids for gushing limb stumps...

I hadn't even heard of this. I'll try and check it out.

BTW, Philadelphia has some bad neighborhoods, just like most cities, but it's not bad overall.

I'm puzzled why vicious inner city crime is used as an excuse for racism and deregulating non-Westerners to third class status, when non-whites are the primary victims of these deranged sociopaths that Louis Theroux was brushing shoulders with.
