LOST S5 Finale 1/27/2010

Just watched this again tonight, glad I did too cause I had forgotten a few things. I liked the scrollilng text they had the bottom to clue us in on what is going on. That part actually filled in a good bit of information, some things I was not too clear on, like for example the reason we see all the different hieroglyphs and whatnot is because over thousands of years many civilizations have called the island their home, so naturally they built monuments and stuff. The island has had many civilizations living there in the past thousands of years. Also cleared up some things about Jacob and the man in black. I'm strongly getting the vibe that Jacob is the good guy here.

Anyway, really looking forward to the premier next week!

Some tidbits from Jacob's tapestry that were revealed in the enhanced version last night-

"Only the dead have seen the end of war." (Plato)

"May the gods grant thee all that thy heart desires." (The Odyssey)

There was a funny bit near the beginning when the pop up said (referring to Jacob in the modern age) "Though it has been at least 100 years since his conversation with the Man In Black, Jacob has not aged". I'm going to say that it had been a lot more than 100 years, unless people were still piloting frigates in 1910.

"The Man In Black" might be seen as another Stephen King connection. This was the name of the principal villain in the first Dark Tower book. JJ Abrams has been tapped to adapt Dark Tower into a movie.

Also, in case you missed it the first time around, the answer to the code question "What lies in the shadow of the statue" was "He who will save us all", in latin.

Interesting that the question is "WHAT lies..." and the answer implies it was "WHO lies..."

So what does it mean if the "What" is a person/entity?

The "annoying" little explanations are actually pretty useful...what I missed/forgot the first time around:

-Jacob touched all the 815 survivors

-Jacob's comment to Jack about him "just needing a push" might mean that Jacob deliberately intended to position Jack as the 815 leader (and future leader of the Others?)

-Jacob didn't just wake Locke up when daddy pushed him out the window - it looked like he resurrected Locke from the dead!

-Loophole guy from the first part of the episode = new Locke

One point of confusion, tho: I thought the sailing ship on the horizon must be the Black Rock. But the explanation said the time was a century ago, rather than two centuries ago, when you'd expect a ship of that sort, especially a slave slip transporting slaves across vast distances like that. What year was the first part of the episode taking place in?

Jack's reason for wanting to reset everything... being that he lost kate... was stupid. Should have been: "Shannon. Ana Lucia. Eko. Faraday. Boone. Charlie." that would be a truly worthy reason, one that would totally be in character for the guy who has this obsessive need to "fix things".

"What lies in the shadow of the statue" was "He who will save us all", in latin.

What lied there was Locke's corpse that they dumped out. A who that is a what.

So, it's all part of Jacob's plan to have the black dude kill him to break the cycle or something.

I also watched the rerun of the finale, and I'm glad I did. Since I don't have S5 on DVD yet, it was good to get refreshed on what happened "previously on LOST", and plus the pop-up info was insightful. Can't wait for Tues.!

So in the opening scene they kind of establish, Jacob wants to bring people to the island, the Man in Black scoffs at the idea. He wants to keep people away.

I was, tonight, watching the S4 finale, There's no place like home (actually kind of underrated, i enjoyed it immensely, and still feels relevant even though it was over a season ago).

Going from the idea that Christian and a lot of the "jacob told me" stuff is actually the Man in Black... it means the Man in Black is responsible for the island moving, and trying to hide the island... Michael's last scene, having ensured that the Oceanic Six are free to get off the island and that the freighter is gonna go ka-bloey, is Xtian Shepard telling him 'You can go now' - ie he fulfilled his purpose, to help keep the island hidden.

This neatly fits the motives assigned to him in the S5 finale opening scene.

Whereas, the hallucinations urging them to go back, are most likely Jacob trying to draw them all BACk to the island.

At times during the series, Smokey, and some hallucinations' motives seem to be counter... I think the opening scene of S5 kind of answered more than we think. Just some random thoughts. The 'two beings' stuff does answer a lot. I think there's enough gray area to suggest that the Man in Black might be the good guy trying to protect the island.
