Oh please, compared to the scumbags portrayed on TV today, Smith is a cartoon.
And besides, kids are going to emulate what they see on TV anyway, just like we did. I'd rather see them copy Dr. Smith than Gaius Baltar.

Gaius Baltar was Dr. Smith. A self-centered, Machiavellian doctor who was willing to commit treason in exchange for personal gain; a narcissist in love with his own intellect; a coward and sybarite with a tendency toward goofy histrionics and an ongoing association with cybernetic beings; a character who functioned as a perennial irritant and threat to his shipmates but somehow managed to remain a part of their group for years. Pretty much the same character.
Zachary Smith is living up to his name, I could definitely hear Dr. Smith as I was reading that. They actually show reruns on one of the local channels, I need to DVR an ep or two.
There have been some interesting discussions over at HobbyTalk.com with the people from Moebius Models. Their new 18" J2 kit has only the upper deck. While Polar Lights' 12" J2 had a lower deck crammed in with about a 5-foot scale height, Moebius just threw their hands up in the air and said "fuhGET about it!"
This is part of why I wish the designers of spacecraft (etc.) in TV shows and films would actually "map out" the interiors with the exteriors so that sort of stupidity wouldn't happen. Obviously in something the size of the Enterprise or some other large ship, there's lots of play time available on interior space, but for something like the Millennium Falcon, the Jupiter II, the Spindrift, etc., there's really no excuse for that sort of thing.

This happens in just about every tv show I have seen. It extends all the way to houses. I just figure that what we see in the show is how it is supposed to be. The J2 is a two level ship.(excluding the third seen in a 3rd season episode)
Yeah the scale between the various minatures and full set do not match but that doesnt mean it cant work within the confines of a show. I doubt that the producers were planning on geeky types to want to build an exact duplicate of the vehicles with studio accuarte interiors. With a little rescaling both levels of the J2 can fit in very logically.(with some minor interiror changes of course)
I'm not entirely sure whether the lower level of the Jupiter 2 existed in the original pilot. I think it may have, but I'm uncertain. Maybe the ship miniature was designed with the assumption it had one level, and then once they added a lower deck, they were still stuck with the miniature footage they had.
Actually, I think whasisname on Stargate Universe was an example of how Smith coulda been had he stayed evil, as originally written.

Hmm, Dr. Rush is similar to Dr. Smith, but "evil" isn't really the word. More like Machiavellian, willing to lie and manipulate and put others in danger to advance his own agendas. But I think there's more nuance to him. He isn't actively trying to hurt anyone or sabotage anything, just to pursue his scientific research and discover the secrets of the Ancients.
But it is true that, like Smith, his actions were directly responsible for getting the rest of the cast stranded aboard a spaceship.
Well, Smith COULD have been like Rush. A sensible writer would have had Smith no longer trying to sabotage the mission (which would be stupid, considering his butt was on the line now that he's lost too) but pursuing anything that would give him a personal advantage. Have him BE a "doctor" and use his brain to figure stuff out before Prof. Robinson, for example.
