Also, like all Irwin Allen shows, the interiors would never fit the real crafts' exteriors.

Irwin Allen repeatedly gave us American Tardises.

There have been some interesting discussions over at HobbyTalk.com with the people from Moebius Models. Their new 18" J2 kit has only the upper deck. While Polar Lights' 12" J2 had a lower deck crammed in with about a 5-foot scale height, Moebius just threw their hands up in the air and said "fuhGET about it!"

When Irwin Allen decided to enlarge the family ship from the "Gemini-12" to the "Jupiter-2", he should have just used the flying saucer from the 1955 "This Island Earth" movie. It's big enough for the Chariot, the Spacepod, the command deck, the living deck, the engine deck, and even 'multiple' families to live in.

Yes... the Jupiter-2 is only about 50-feet in diameter.

I hate to say it, but I think the movie thought out how the mission would work just a little better than the show did. At least the ship was bigger and there was something of a plan and reason why Robinson was needed to go to Alpha Centa-, er, Alpha Prime.

Deanna Lund was an very sexy actress back in 60s. What Britney Spears would do for that movie bring young customers to that movie. Especialy her fans. And John Cleese could act just like Fitzhugh charter. But he would add british jokes to attract british movie goers. My idea bringing John Cleese as Fitzhugh so guys like Harrison Page and Michael Douglas get fed up with Fitzhugh just like the old actors on that show got sick of him of complaining.

This is part of why I wish the designers of spacecraft (etc.) in TV shows and films would actually "map out" the interiors with the exteriors so that sort of stupidity wouldn't happen. Obviously in something the size of the Enterprise or some other large ship, there's lots of play time available on interior space, but for something like the Millennium Falcon, the Jupiter II, the Spindrift, etc., there's really no excuse for that sort of thing.

Who cares about that? As far as I know, she's not an actress (aside from the thing where she's pretending to be a musician). Okay, IMDb lists all of five acting credits, but clearly it's not her area of expertise. It's a thoroughly bizarre suggestion, a complete non sequitur.

What has being British got to do with anything? Kurt Kasznar was Austrian, and so was Fitzhugh's accent. And where do you get the idea that British moviegoers will only see a movie with "British jokes," whatever that means? And where did you get the idea that Fitzhugh should be a comic-relief character? He may have been a Dr. Smith knockoff, but Kasznar played him a lot more seriously.

My idea bringing John Cleese as Fitzhugh so guys like Harrison Page and Michael Douglas get fed up with Fitzhugh just like the old actors on that show got sick of him of complaining.

Harrison Page is 68 years old. Michael Douglas is 65. While we're at it, Scott Bakula is 55. You're suggesting these people for roles that were played by men in their 30s, roles that demanded considerable physicality with all the running and climbing. Meanwhile, John Cleese is 70 and your suggestion for Betty, Jennifer Aniston, is 40.

Loved it as a child, and if I could just watch Dr. Smith/Will/the Robot scenes would probably still watch it on a regular basis. This series is the classic scifi example of how strong characters who attract the viewers' interest may be creative writing, but are not "good" writing in the ordinarily accepted senses of the word.

Unless you want to be unorthodox and deem creativity good?

And FitzHugh in Land of the Giants is a terrific example of how evil Smith would have been completely boring. Harris' takeoff on Falstaff (or however Mr. Harris created him,) was a huge improvement. Following the actor's lead was one of Irwin Allen's smartest moves in my opinion.

Surely you must understand, Sir--if the good Major West would STOP crash landing the poor Jupiter Two, it would not be necessary for him to REPAIR it nearly so often. A POOR "pilot" indeed, if I must say so myself! I suspect that clanking calamity, the Robot, would do a better job if only the mediocre Major's EGO would allow someone else to drive the ship! Why, as it stands now, I doubt we shall manage to return to Earth until Major West has dented the hull of the ship against every asteroid and dust-mote from here to the galactic edge! I can only hope for his sake that when we DO make it home a job is waiting for him in a more appropriate profession; perhaps SCHOOL BUS driver . . .

I loved the show as well.. interesting how one preceptions change from when one watched the show as a child and again as an adult... today... I'd have left dr. smith on the first planet we got to...
