Slap? In the uncut episode, Kirk had to punch him hard in the face, three times. It was edited down to one punch when the show was remastered for syndication in the early 80s. I think this was a rare if not unique case in which Star Trek wasn't just edited for commercial time, but to tone down the violence. Commercial time was still the bigger consideration, of course.

Ahhh, interesting. I watched “Miri” for the first time in ages recently and was actually a little surprised at Kirk punching the crap out of him and thinking that it seemed a bit excessive. I wonder if I was subconsciously remembering that 80s cut.

I’ve always thought a hard cut into the fight scene already underway was a great and exciting editing choice.

I agree, but at the same time I wish that crewman wasn't walking in the background because the near miss by the attacker was really well executed. I think I would've enjoyed it both ways.
