That's what happens when you tell the sound guy to come up with a noise for a creature when you don't yet know what the creature is.

My favorite is when Smokey is pulling someone on the ground, like John Locke in the first season finale, and you get that really odd sound like rusty gears grinding. They played that sound again in the last episode.
