I wanted to give this one an 'above average', but had to go with 'excellent' because it was just that good.

- It was interesting to see that Ben can be just as Machiavellian no matter what reality he's in.

- It was also nice to see that he came through for Alex in the end.

- Speaking of Alex, what did she say about her mother? I missed that little blurb.

- Ben's on-island plea to Ilana was touching and Emerson gave quite the performance. That alone was enough to justify an 'excellent'.

- Ilana's hotness also needs to be mentioned. I've liked Zuleikha Robinson ever since her Lone Gunmen days. I hope she gets a backstory before the show is done.

- Miles! :techman:

- Lots of other good stuff with Richard, Jack, Hurley, etc. I liked that they gave us some bits and pieces concerning who Richard is, both through the on-island stuff and through Ben's history talk with Alex in the library. That part in the flashsideways was especially a nice touch.

- Great ending with Widmore finally coming to the island. Just when you though the episode couldn't get any better, we got that.

What dragged the show down a bit and made me consider not giving this episode the highest grade? I still want to know more about Ben's backstory, like his vast off-island network, how he got it, and what he was doing with it. I hope we get something before the show is done and it looks like we might, so I'm willing to ignore this for now.

Also, I'm surprised that Ben survived the episode.
I wasn't surprised. They can't kill Ben. :p

And to answer coolghoul's question...

And Agent Richard07 - why a passport as the choice of photo to denote our friend Benjamin?
It's actually a passport with some money. They represent Ben's resources and resourcefulness, and he kept those very things stashed away for his off-island exploits.

I wonder who's side Widmore is on. You'd think Jacob since he said someone was coming to the island, but you never know. I suppose him having to be on the same side as Ben would be interesting.

I also wonder where people keep mysteriously disappearing to. Both Richard and Jacob said that Jack/Hurley wouldn't believe or understand where they were. It's time to start getting some Richard answers, and not the kind that we already figured out in the season premiere.

Excellent.

I love how they make you feel all good toward the end and then twist!

Great episode, as most Ben episodes are. They are definitely setting Ben up for a redemption arc this season in a similar way that Nu-BSG did for Baltar. The only thing that bothered me was why on earth Ben didn't just use the huge amount of his leverage to both depose of that principal and make him write the letter of recommendation??? Seriously, either Ben is that naive/stupid in the Alt reality or he was just so caught off guard that he didn't realize how much leverage he had over the principal.

Other than that, this week's episode makes the third in a row where the alt reality episode parallels the island events and inform us about who the characters really are. Jack makes a break through with his daddy issues off island, Sayid is drawn yet again into murder and Ben proves he can make a good choice.

Also, this is the first that I can remember that the alt timeline people mention Dharma and the island so they were on the island at some point. Very interesting. Plays into my theory that the alt timeline people will use the Ajira flight to make their way to the island somehow and the two timelines will merge.

Anyway, great episode. 9/10

From what I was able to see of the episode, I thought it was a good one. Maybe not as great as last episode but I enjoyed the scenes with the Ben of the alternate reality and on the island and the ones between Jack, Hurley, and Richard. It seems Jack is beginning to finally come around to the way of destiny after his blowup at the Lighthouse.
Speaking of Ben, I'm glad someone was able to resist Fake Locke's charms and didn't end up joining his side. I also think they're setting up a redemption arc for Ben and for a moment, I thought they were going to kill off the Ben character and use this episode as his send-off.

I'm trying to figure out what THE FRENCH WOMAN is doing raising her daughter in LA.

The same thing a Japanese man was doing raising his son in LA.

I'll stand by "LA X" meaning that LA is the crossing point. It's where everyone diverges.

I just thought it was a little silly, and I was really hoping Rousseau would actually show up.

What I was most interested in, however, was that this is the first flashsideways that actually mentioned the existence of the Island and the Dharma Initiative. The question now is: why did Roger and Ben leave the Island?

Ditto.

That interested me too, and I assume that in this time, Ben was never shot because the Losties were never there. Roger probably got sick of his job and was allowed to leave.

That was actually my theory, too. Instead of getting stuck being a Workman in this timeline, he decided to just head back to his old life off the island.

I'm stuck between Above Average and Excellent on this one...it was one of the best so far this season, though almost all of them (hi, Kate) have been great. That final montage with Giacchino's "Oceanic 6" theme playing was absolutely wonderful, and so was Emerson in his amazing confessional to Ilana. But that being said, as great as this episode was, it didn't fully "hit home" for me like the true (IMO) greats like "The Constant," "Walkabout," or "The Incident" did. That being said, it's certainly one of the best set-up episodes this show has ever done...though again, given the track record, that's not really saying much, since pretty much every episode of this damn show has been set-up . I'm also willing to bet that this initial impression will change after a re-watch, like plenty of initially "almost there" Lost episodes have, changing eventually to "completely awesome and essential."

Oh, and the flash-sideways was perhaps the best one yet, and offered a really excellent counterpoint to the on-island story, in a way that the show hasn't really been able to reproduce since the first season's flashback/on-island tales having thematic connections. Since then, the flashbacks and flashforwards have had important narrative reasons, but very rarely have they meant something more. These flash-sidwayses are really quite brilliant, and I'm sure hoping they end up tying directly into the main story.

P.S. WIDMORE! As soon as they showed that away-from-the-island shot of the characters, I KNEW it had to be a boat. I was almost right...the sub was a great choice. I figured (in those few seconds I had to figure) that it was either Desmond or Widmore. Here's hoping Des still has the chance to finish his story this year!

Is it me or the cute chick who plays Alex could play Alxy in a Half Life 2 movie. ;)

She's working two jobs -- one at Hurley's box company and the other at the phone sex operation that Locke doesn't call in the alternate reality. :p

Above Average.

So what are they setting up with Jin? I mean he's been gone for three episodes now. Must be something significant going on there.

I'm back on the sentient Island camp again, I mean Jacob is dead so he can't be protecting everyone right? Must be the island. Unless there's an other-other leader. Nah that's too crazy.

I wonder if we'll see Christian again this season? If his deal in all this is never explained that will remain the biggest WTF for me. Unless every time we saw him earlier he was Smokey, but that doesn't quite jive I don't think. Does it? Hmmm.

Loved the Leonard Cohen song in the promo for next week's episode.

I'm fairly certain Christian is still around, and I wouldn't be surprised if ended up being a bigger power than Jacob or Smokey in the end.
